  • Orbx announces FTX Global to be released in 2013!

    What does FTX Global include?
    • Complete replacement of FSX ground textures
    • Custom autogen houses and objects
    • 3D lights with FTX Day/Night Mode support
    • Selection of custom trees
    • Replaces default FSX so you can run with FTX Central set to EU, NA etc
    • Can be uninstalled so you can revert to default FSX
    • Some custom landclass in sample areas initially (can be disabled if desired)
    • Perpetual free updates (textures, landclass tweaks, POI objects, upgraded default airports)
    • Dedicated staff working on upgrades full-time
    • Dual installer for FSX and P3D

What does FTX Global NOT include?
    • Geographical and vector data (roads, rivers, coastlines, elevation mesh)
    • Full hand-crafted landclass and polygon landclass
    • Unique ground textures native to the area you're flying in
    • Upgraded airports everywhere
    • Traffic on all major roads (only default FSX traffic)
    • Extensive custom modelled POIs like power stations, windfarms, stadiums, photoreal areas etc

    What does it look like?

Spectacular! I am testing a pre-alpha build at the moment and I can promise you most of the places I randomly pick to visit around the world look beautiful covered in Orbx textures. I did a dusk flight over the south of France last week and to see all the 3D lights twinkling over villages and towns was magical. I have included a selection of screenshots below.

However, beware of the limitations of FTX Global. It is first and foremost a texture replacement and it uses the current 'pool' of textures Orbx has created since 2008. This means that in many places the cityscapes and rural crops and fields won't look right at all. The initial release will have a whole bunch of warts because of the restrictions of the FSX landclass texture system. (This is the very reason we make full-featured FTX regions). We will have a team to deal with obvious landclass back spots first and then slowly begin to add POIs, airports and new content. Think of FTX Global as an upfront investment in an evolving ecosystem which improves over time. We will also invest in code that allows you to auto-update FTX Global or as a mimum alert you to new content and patches.

    How does it perform?

The performance is fantastic - I am running FSX inside a virtual machine using Parallels Desktop 8.0 on my humble Macbook Air 2.0Ghz and it runs quite smoothly (the Windows 7 VM was allocated 4GB of RAM, 512MB of VRAM, 1x CPU). On a decent PC configured for FSX properly it should scream. I'm in the process of setting a proper quad-core i7 testing PC at 3.2Ghz with a GTX650m GPU and I'll update you on the performance side of things again. The Switzerland and Ireland screenshots were taken from this VM running on my Mac.

    What will it cost?

The price of this product is AU$195 and will include free perpetual upgrades including a constant flow of upgraded airports at key locations around the world, for example Helsinki in Finland or Manila in the Phillipines. We are building a dedicated team of people who will do nothing but work on continual improvements, POIs and airports and key areas of custom landclass around the world. Additionally, as Orbx releases the much more detailed and sophisticated regions around the world, we will dip into the expanding texture pool to finesse the global product, all at no charge.

Will it affect the "regular" Orbx regions being worked on?

Not at all. There will be zero impact on regular regions since we're hiring new staff to make this product and we're using existing texture assets. If anything in 2013 we will release more regular FTX regions than any year of our short history; South Alaska, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, and Northern California as well. Our average release rate has been 1.75 regions per year; in 2013 it will be 5+

We also hope to move into Europe next year, with Holland confirmed and then perhaps Norway, Belgium, Germany etc. FTX Global simply does not have the depth and scale of detail of our regular FTX regions, there's no comparison and those upcoming regions are made with unique textures licensed from aerial imagery over those particular countries.

What is FTX Global Compatible with?

    Ultimate Terrain X (UTX)
SceneryTech LC or any other LC addon
Any FSX scenery addon - but be aware Orbx textures are richer and darker than FSX default so many airports may not blend in at the edges of their photoreal coverage area
    REX/AS2012/Other weather texture/WX engine addons
FSGenesis and other elevation mesh addons
    FSWC
    Enbseries
    Shade

What is it not compatible with?

GEX - it does the same thing (replaces FSX default textures) so you decide if you want GEX or FTX Global
    FScene4X - as above
Orbx payware airports - those are designed and matched to our dedicated full FTX regions for AU/NA/NZ/EU because of mesh elevation and other landscape mods

How big will the installer be?

The installer will be download-only for the first six months or so until we can bundle all the monthly Downloadable Content (DLCs) into a DVD release. This installer will weigh in at less than 5GB and will need about 8GB of disk space. We would recommend about 10GB of free space for FTX Global.

    When will it be released?

We don't give release dates at Orbx (and when I have broken this rule in the past invariably releases have been delayed for various reasons, so I won't again). It will be in the first half of 2013, that much is sure.

If you can imagine your whole world covered in Orbx, you won't have to wait too much longer. Here are some screenshots taken from random locations. We'll be posting lots more over the coming month and I am sure Emmsie will be using his magic eye to find amazing locations. After all, it's a big planet!

Well that kinda sucks as I bought GEX just a couple months ago... Oh well... at that price (probably around $230 US) that is not something I randomly pick up.

I will say that GEX is fantastic, so thinking that this uses the ORBX textures it should look amazing. And it will cover the whole globe, versus the GEX I bought just covers the US.

            - Make FTX Central redundant, you can keep all Orbx regions active at once
            - Choose which tree and autogen set to use (we will see if we can code a DLL to do this dynamically for you)
            - Automatically check for patches, SP1, updates for all Orbx installed products when connected to to the internet, then let you choose which to download
            - Control the 3D lights on/off, links to Aero and the Lights Tweaker

At least, this is my wish-list

We need to plan how to implement this and then I need to hire a coder to write the app.

I want FTX Global to act as the overriding front end to Orbx which manages everything for you. That means if you purchase an older region off DVD which still uses FTX Central, when you run the FTX Global app it will automatically "detect" a new region has been installed and ensure the corrected files are put into place so all regions can remain active at once.

Basically if you use the FTX Global app to launch FSX you can always be assured all your Orbx products are up to date and all regions remain active at once.

Another update, quoted directly from ORBX CEO John Venema

I just want to explain how we will release FTX Global to the market.

When we release it will be the Basic Pack at AU$99.95 which will be a GEX-like addon to replace the default FSX textures for the whole planet. Difference is, we'll include a lot of landclass to make things looks better out of the box. The Basic Pack will not include any DLC addon content, but will include bug fixes.

The Plus Pack will cost another AU$99.95 and will be released some months later. Customers can upgrade to the Plus Pack at anytime they like. For those who don't want new content, the Plus Pack won't be essential. However if you want continually improved landclass, new upgraded airports, POI models, cityscapes and improved content, then the Plus Pack is like a subscription which gives you continual improvements to FTX Global for life (or as long as Orbx remains a company )

In this way we can stage the release of FTX Global to make it more affordable from the outset and let you grow into the Plus Pack if you want to support the ongoing development efforts by Orbx.

We anticipate the Base Pack to be on sale before 30 June 2013, likely much sooner.

I'll continue to preview screenshots from around the world (and I appreciate all the location requests pending) but we are working very hard right now to get the tech right and make this as close to FS 2013 as we can do without needing 10 million dollars from MS to do it instead

Totally agree, and being able to grab it in 2 purchases helps make it easier to explain to our girlfriends/wives I'll grab the basic when its available and pick up the "plus pack" once they release more info on how often the updates are and how much content they really provide.

I thought the announcement of new 3D lights was very cool. I'm excited to see them, especially if there is no framerate impact as they say!

New information today... and target release date of June 15th!

                          Hello everyone,

My FTX Global announcement topic posted a few months ago has been the most viewed topic in Orbx forum history with over 70,000 views, so clearly anticipation is extremely high for the release of this product.

I'm pleased to say that FTXG has now entered alpha stage with the first full build to be released to a limited number of testers over the weekend. The installer weighs in at about 4.5GB and has a disk footprint of about 8.5GB but that will change as we move to beta and RTM.

Here are some more clarification points I can share at this time:

                          1. We are aiming for a June 15th release. That is my birthday, so it's a good deadline to aim for

                          2. The base FTXG product will cost AU$99.95 and will include a huge number of *brand new* textures never seen before in any FTX region which specifically address Eastern Europe, Asia, North and South America and Africa. These new textures have taken over six months to produce. The base product also include five seasons, a combo of the old and new night lighting systems, custom autogen textures and vegetation and some autogen objects

                          3. The base product will include a FREE demo of FTX Global OpenLC, which is our new product being released in July/August that covers the *entire world* with OSM based custom landclass and vector data! FTX Global OpenLC will be priced as a AU$19.95 addon, but the base FTXG will include the entire Baltic States in eastern Europe as a free demo of OpenLC to allow you to try before you buy.

                          4. We have begun work on FTX Airports for FTX Global, one in France, one in Brazil, one in the Philipines and more planned. These airports will work with both FSX Default and FTX Global

                          5. We will soon begin showing screenshots by alpha testers and myself from all around the world, particularly from areas not shown yet.

                          6. The FTX Global base product will not include any mesh, custom POI objects or any other content other than textures, autogen, night lighting and the OpenLC demo area.

                          7. We won't be releasing the "Plus Pack" announced earlier; instead we will release small addons as part of the FTX Global product line such as OpenLC, airports, cityscapes, bundles of POI 3D models and many other enhancements that you can purchase a la carte. These will be priced from $4.99 through to $29.99 - we want to make these addons as affordable as possible so the average FTXG addon price will be about $10-15

                          8. Right now when FTX Global is installed, it replaces the FSX Default and you switch to it using FTX Central. This means that until we solve technical issues around lclookup.bgl and other files, FTX Global is not seamlessly compatible with our FTX Central regions of North America, Oceania and Europe - however that is how it works right now in the alpha build but we will work very hard to remove the need to switch regions before release. If we can't solve that problem at the release, it will be done shortly after. It is in our interest, our customers' interest and other developers' interest to remove all incompatibilities but it's not a trivial task.

EDIT: just a timeline based on some questions further down in this topic:

First task is to give you all the basic pack; the textures and autogen and LC demo area so you can go play

Second task is to make the base pack work seamlessly with our FTX regions and FTX Central

Third task is to give you great OSM based landclass for the whole world

After that we will continually add new FTXG content at very low price points.
                          From: http://www.orbxsystems.com/forum/top...date-may-2013/

My personal thoughts... YAY! June 15th! But then I'm kinda bummed that as of now FTX Central is still needed. I do hope that change comes quick! It's awesome they will now have a landclass product as well, and $20 for the whole world is so much cheaper than UTX, even if it takes time to get out. I do think if you buy every FTXG add on you'll end up spending more than the $200 AU they initially said for everything. But being able to pick and choose will be good, and I think it will give them more incentive to keep releasing content for FTXGlobal.
                          - Michael

Awesome, much happier they are releasing it this way. I wasnt looking forward to the idea of having to search for mesh and landclass to match my shiny new textures. Some mesh contains landclasses, some landclasses contain textures, yadda yadda yadda, its just much simpler getting it all from one place knowing they were developed for one another. Also nice to see the new airports being compatible with default. Cannot wait, have my wallet at the ready!
