  • Help needed for testing a Teamspeak alternative

The msFlights staff has been testing a Teamspeak3 alternative the past few days with positive results so far. We would now like to invite the entire community to join this voice program for testing during the next 4-5 days.

The main reason for us to consider this move is because teamspeak is quite expensive. We are not allowed to use teamspeak's non profit license, so to run the teamspeak server and purchase their annual license amounts to a $30 per month cost. This new program is free, and so far seems to be great.

Unfortunately the testing will be rather short, only about 4-5 days then we will decide whether to drop teamspeak or not. Our teamspeak license expires next Wednesday so we need to make the final decision by then, otherwise we will have to purchase another 1 year long license.

    How to Join:
    1. visit https://discordapp.com/ and click "Download for Windows"
    2. once you install and open the Discord program, look towards the left side of the program and click the + icon with a circle around it, then click "Join Server". Paste in this link then click join: https://discord.gg/010yiD7oy9u88eNIo
    3. To view and adjust user setting such as push to talk, look for a gear wheel icon in the bottom left of the program window next to your user name.

note: by default Discord is set to run when windows starts. To turn this off, right click the Discord icon in your Windows taskbar on the bottom right of your screen.

I was on there for a bit last night... it's very different from TeamSpeak, but it took very little time for me to figure out. It looks more like an "app" as opposed to a classic "program," having fewer, but easier to see & use, buttons and a generally simpler layout.

I'll be on this evening if you want to give it a look but have questions. Your feedback is very helpful!

P.S. I've heard you can access it from your web browser, too, but I haven't tried that yet. The iPhone app is, however, easy to use and, as opposed to the TeamSpeak app, it's free!

P.P.S.- I actually had both TeamSpeak3 and Discord open at the same time, and they worked fine together. I set a different push-to-talk key for each program, however, so I didn't confuse people when I talked.
Take the time, a second to soar; for soon after, beckons a second more.

I can't get Discord to install on my Vista laptop. I get a message saying "The procedure entry point SHGetPropertyStoreForWindow could not be located in the dynamic link library SHELL32.dll". I tried downloading and installing multiple times. I'm not sure what that means or how to fix it.

Discord support says (Aug 03, 2015): "The Discord Client does not work on Windows Vista unfortunately. We support Windows 7 and newer. For Windows Vista the browser version will have to do."

For now try the browser app I guess. It's nearly identical to the desktop app. You could create a desktop shortcut to the web app.

Thanks for the replies. The browser version does work. I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Ya I am trying it now and it seems rather different and not laid out very well compared to teamspeak.

Push to talk working on browser-version without that window being selected?

On the browser version, you have to have the Discord window selected to talk.

Yep that's what I figured. Vista users won't be able to use the web-app separate download version of it and be on push to talk.
