Windows 8.1 hangs

Ever since I updated my computer from XP to 8.1 I keep getting a random freeze or hang not only in the game but windows as well.
every thing is up to date, compatible and virus free.
any ideas??

Have you checked the event viewer to see if you can trace the faulting application?
