  • Novawing24 goes adventuring to deepest darkest Africa

    Howdy all!

As some of you know by now I am heading off today to UAE and East Africa to go and hopefully not get eaten by Lions, Hyenas, Blood diseases etc.

So I will be away from the Community for about a month.

I will be in touch when I can and hopefully sharing lots of photos!

Take care guys, and say farewell to MS Flight for me on the 14th.

      Howdy pilots!

So I am currently in Abu Dhabi relaxing for my wife's Birthday. We had a long flight to UAE via Singapore, including them getting my meal request wrong. But was interesting, we were on an A330 and it has Wi-Fly which was surprisingly affordable, though I did not partake.

The coolest thing though was cameras mounted in the forward fuselage which allows you to watch the world fly by. Gives a whole new meaning to fly by view I can tell you!

Tomorrow we will be adventuring to Ferrari world and some more shopping!

Talk soon guys, and hopefully some pictures on the next post.

Stay safe! And don't catch nothin' that an SOS pad, bleach, and penicillin can't get rid of!
When God finally says, "King, my office. Now!" I want to go barreling in there half spun out with holes in my clothes, smoke rising from me, and my hair in a mess. I want to be busy. I don't want to go explain myself and not have a great story to go along with it.

Thank you so much, Novawing, for the excellent photography. It was an unexpected joy to encounter you on TeamSpeak yesterday afternoon Abu Dhabi time. High tea at the palace sounded like an experience of a lifetime. Again, Happy birthday to your wife. We'll all look forward to further word (and photographic documentation) of Abu Dhabi and then the dark continent as you get available bandwidth.

                  Hey all!

so we're still alive and kicking!

                  So our Safari has started!

On approach into Nairobi there were two rather sad and sorry looking AN-32's (head over to Storm's OneDrive to get your very own!) Sadly no photos but will hopefully get some before we fly out in a couple of weeks time.

I am currently sitting in Uganda after having driven for 13 hours today. It has been fun camping (not my normal style that's for sure).

As I had thought internet is far between here in Africa, so not sure when the next update will be. We have had a great time, unfortunately my beautiful telephoto lens had an argument with gravity and lost. So I am restricted to my stock lens.

but here are a couple of snaps taken so far!

                  Talk to you all soon!

Sorry to hear about your telephoto lens. It's the one lens I use most often (Nikkor AF-S 70-300 VR II F4.5-5.6) on a 1.5x cropped sensor, and I would be lost without it. Stay safe and healthy while over there, and hope to hear some "tall tales" when you get back.

                        Howdy all,

Just a quick check in. We are leaving Uganda today and heading to Rwanda. So far we have seen four of the big five, only have leopards to go!

Spent some time with the Hippos including having them come grazing by our tent in the middle of the night! We travel now to Rwanda to see gorrilas in the mist for real! No photos today, connection not the most stable ao see you all soon!

                          Howdy all!

So we have just arrived back in Nairobi after our 16 days on the road. In the morning we leave for our next leg down to Serengeti and Massai Mara.

So the trip thus far has been downs (my camera lens and my health) and ups (gorillas, chimps, elephants, travel companions...pretty much everything else!)

We spent an hour with the gorillas after trekking for about two and a half hours through a mixture of farmland and rainforest. what struck me the most about the hour we spent with them is how much their behaviour is like ours. we watched as a teenage female played with a 1yo male, and tried to get us involved in play! I tell you what, there is something incredible about being "gorilla handled" by a 100+kg gorilla and yet the touch was almost gentle, it was playful.

After that we moved back through to Uganda and did some Whitewater rafting before heading back to Nairobi.

It has been interesting that in all of the game parks we go to we are escorted by Park rangers armed with AK-47's for our protection. Protection from what I am still not 100% sure on.

It has been amazing so far! Hoping to see Leopards on this next leg,

anyway here a few more pics for everyone.

                            Howdy again pilots,

I write this sitting down at my last breakfast in Africa. We came back from Massai Mara late last night, owing to a balls up with timings for flights so we didn't get our second night on the savannah. I look around me and I struggle to believe all of the things we have done in the last 4 weeks.

From 5 star luxury in Abu Dhabi to pitching our own tents after a 13 hour drive on an approximation of a road, it has been a surreal and fulfilling journey.

We were asked by some friends what the best part of the trip has been, and I don't know if I have an answer. All of it is soo memorable and for different reasons. Spending time playing soccer with orphans, being shown how to milk a goat by villagers, watching the Alpha Chimp charge through the undergrowth carrying a tree trunk, rafting down the Nile in an inflatable to being gorilla handled during play time by beautiful gorillas, all of it is memorable for soo many reasons.

I won't say I am sad to leave but emotional yes, travel gives one a new perspective and appreciation for the world.

Well I will sign off there, I maybe able to touch base enroute otherwise see you in a few days back in the land of drop bears!
