I tried the demo, got through the tutorials and tried the scenario missions. Not bad. I tried building my own rocket, but I just can't get it into space. I don't seem to have enough power. I read the Wikipedia article on how to do it, but I must be doing something wrong. Hmm.

Don't forget that this is a case where the demo version is vastly incomplete and is not representative of the current state of the program. Unfortunately such incomplete demos often dissuade people from trying the product. The actual program up to this point has 10 times more building parts them the demo, making it much easier to accomplish your goals.

As Lazer said the demo is a very early build and very incomplete. The current version with the First Contracts addon (which is free) makes it very challenging but very rewarding!!!
