  • Changing Aircraft Config file

Okay I bought the Area 51 U-2. I've flown it a couple times and can't get it above 55k. It should get up to 83-85k, I've sent them an email and no reply. I've seen some posts other places where people have the same issue in fsx and Area 51 isn't responding to them either. So I figure with all the talent and knowledge in the msflights community I would ask if anyone could point me in the direction of what I need to change to get this aircraft up there.

    Thanks in advance

The published operational ceiling of the U2 is 70,000ft. However, to fly at that altitude, there is only a very small speed window that it will work (called "coffin corner"). What happens if you use "Map" to slew, and set the altitude to 70,000 ft and at the same time set the speed to just 5 knots below Vne, and then return to game?

Yeah, I got the plane because my Dad was with the TR-1 and U-2 Units. He sad they go above 70k all the time, up to 85k before. I was hoping to fly it up to that altitude or to the altitude to engage the afs system. Even activating that at 50k I cant get it to go above 55k.
I'm trying to get together all the aircraft my Dad was with get them painted up tail numbers and all and make a little video. I would like to get the U-2 or Tr-1 up to 70+ for the video which slew would be ok. After that flying up to that altitude would be nice. Most post I have seen for the people that have played it in fsx havent gotten it above 55k either.

From my understanding, which is very little, you need to edit the actual .air file included with the aircraft. The only editor that I know of is Aircraft Air File Manager, or AAM. You can download it HERE.

That's the easy part. Once you have everything open, you'll be presented with a ton of information that means absolutely nothing to me, so that's about as far as I can get you. I suggest speaking with 4d, he's the only person I know for sure who has heavily modified .air files.

Edit: Also, double check the manual. According to their website and a review at Rays Aviation, this thing should be able to get up to 70,000ft.

In many cases you need to edit both the .air file and the aircraft.cfg file. Why? Because in some cases, FSX uses the parameters in the .air file and ignores the same ones in aircraft.cfg, and in other cases FSX uses the uses the parameters in aircraft.cfg and ignores the same ones in the .air file!

Why? Welcome to the wonderful world of Mess-crosoft. No one said it had to make sense. This has been the case from FS2002 onward.

It's not always clear which parameter you need to change. I take the simple and clean solution and keep the two files in synchronization. It may take an extra 10 minutes but it's easy to do and it always works.

However, I probably couldn't help you with this one. All my edits are on prop planes.

I sent a message to Area 51 Simulations about the U-2, here was their response.

Me: Any tips getting the Dragon Lady up to 70,000? Thank you

            A51Sim: Not yet sorry

So... make of that what you will lol.

Thanks for the replies guys. I couldn't find a manual for this on the Area 51 site or in the folders with the download. This AIR and config file thing is probably a little more complicated than I was hoping to get. Thanks again
