  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #18: Alabama at 240 knots

A brisk flight through the Heart of Dixie.

    Week 18: Alabama
    KDHN>KAUO>KEKY>KMDQ>KCRX

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • All legs are GPS direct.
    • All airports have ILS or LOC, which we'll use if bad weather.
    • KAUO has localizer only with no glideslope.
    • In good weather, we'll change course on approach, according to surface wind.
Download the PLN flight plan file here.
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
    Speed: 240 knots
    Altitude: 3,000 ft

    AIRCRAFT
Capable of steady 240 kt cruise at 3,000 ft.
    Some suggested aircraft listed here.

    RESTRICTIONS
    No jet airliners.

    WHICH VERSION, CLASSIC OR STEAM?
We will be using Classic, not Steam. We will continue to use Classic in future weeks for the Great 48! until more critical add-ons are working, at which point we'll move to Steam.

    WEATHER
Server specified default is OK. However...
Recommended: Real-world live weather generators, e.g. FSrealWX lite or Active Sky Next.
    • FSrealWX lite is freeware available in our TeamSpeak file browser. Why not try it?
    • Active Sky Next is payware.
I'll be using real-world weather (Active Sky Next) and calling active runways accordingly.

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware).
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware).
Vector users please see recommendations here.

RECOMMENDED SCENERY ADDITIONS FOR FTX GLOBAL USERS
You can download the whole series of freeware FTX global airport packs here.
NA packs relevant for this flight:
    • NA pack 3 (First stop KAUO and third stop KMDQ)
    • NA pack 12 (Second stop KEKY)

This will be a great opportunity to fly The Connie, and that's what I would like to use if the runway lengths of the airports allow.

The Connie is fine. There are many other good choices, big and (very) small, for this flight. Some suggestions below, including some from my OneDrive.

The critical airport is Auburn. Landing the Connie takes half the localizer runway (36 - 5275 ft x 75 ft) and you can even (just) take-off fully loaded on the shorter runway (28 - 4000 ft x 75 ft). Those are the two runways we'll probably use: straight in and straight out. Doubtless the distances are better if you boot out the passengers and jettison some fuel.

Other suitable large aircraft are the C-130, Boxcar and the An-12.
Suitable medium sized aircraft include the An-32, Howard 500 and the OV-10 Bronco.
Small aircraft include the Lancair Legacy, BD-5J, Stingray and the Sus Scrofa.
There are, of course, many others.

Tabular flight plan, maps and diagrams below.

Correction made to opening event post. Yes this is through Alabama, not Georgia! Many thanks to Razor for pointing that out.
