  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #17: Florida - AIRSHIPS!

A gentle waft following roads through the Sunshine State's panhandle - in airships!

    Week 17: Florida
    KTLH>1FD0>KDHN

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • All legs VFR, following roads. Not direct.
    • Final approach will be into wind. Land where you can!
    • Beware the water tower at 1FD0.
    • Please check the flight plan for full details. It includes many GPS waypoints.
Download the PLN flight plan file here. (Includes waypoints for the roads.)
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
    Speed: 60 knots
Altitude: Low VFR (no obstructions en route above 750 ft, except around Dothan.)

    AIRCRAFT
Airships only. There are two suitable airships on my OneDrive. (See pics below.)
    • Zeppelin NT, available in the Modern Oddities hangar. (We flew this through Delaware.)
    • Goodyear K-class blimp, available from the Factory Floor.
    Notes:
    • Zeppelin: This is a modern aircraft used for touring and advertising, and it is by far the more maneuverable of the two. I supply a patch that adds GPS, instead of Aerosoft payware, plus ASN WX radar (if you have it). Please read the README and short manual carefully to familiarize with the aircraft. You will need to use the start-up sequence described there!
    • Blimp: This is supplied as an unfinished work-in-progress pre-release version 0.1. CAVEAT EMPTOR! This 1942 example of the K-class was used as an antisubmarine aircraft. It has a very attractive vintage model, with an almost steampunk gondola. It is a little slower than the Zeppelin. Beware: this blimp is ponderous to maneuver when landing. THIS BLIMP DOES NOT WORK IN DIRECTX 10 PREVIEW.
    • Both: Please practice and get used to landing, taking-off and parking into wind, well ahead of time. :eagerness:
    RESTRICTIONS
    Airships only.

WHICH FSX VERSION, CLASSIC OR STEAM?
We will be using Classic, not Steam, for this flight. We will continue to use Classic in future weeks for the Great 48! until (a) more critical add-ons are working (such as Active Sky Next, and FTX Global and Vector for Classic and Steam on the same machine), (b) Steam server stability is at least as good as Classic, and (c) we have adequate policing on the Steam server.

    WEATHER
Real-world weather forecast is low cloud/poor visibility: not good for airships. We'll use fixed server-based fair weather. Please don't use add-on weather for this flight!

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware).
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware).
Vector users please see recommendations here.
There are no OrbX airports on this flight.

Many thanks for these vivid Zeppelin repaints! A great addition. :eagerness:

Just a small correction: in your README you say:
1: extract the three texture.XX directories to the Zeppelin NT_FSX in your main FSX/SimObjects/Rotorcraft folder
          This should read:
1: extract the three texture.XX directories to the Zeppelin NT_FSX in your main FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes folder

Great pics and video guys! Thank you. :eagerness: Some pics of my own from the second leg (click for full rez):

On the ground at Lawrence, Grand Ridge.

What the passengers could see, looking backwards.

                      Over the city of Dothan.

                      On approach to final destination.

Parked up at Dothan, awaiting two K-class blimps, one over the threshold.

These seem to be popular flights. Perhaps I'll aim to include airships in the Great 48! every two or three months.
