  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #13: Virginia - GOONEY BIRDS

    Gooney Birds!

    Week 13: Virginia

Original plan (now abandoned, due to widespread fog forecast )
    KHSP>KRMN>KJGG>(KFFA)<KMQI
    Touch and go at KFFA.

In the event of poor visibility on the Atlantic coast, we will fly instead:
KHSP>KRMN>KLFI>KPGV if we make a last minute en route decision, or

    NEW PLAN!
    KHSP>KRMN>KJGG>KPGV
as we can make a planned decision beforehand.

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • All legs VFR direct but we'll use ILS if bad weather.
    • We may break off course on approaches, direction according to surface wind.
UPDATED! Download the planned diversion version of the PLN flight plan file here.
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
    Speed: 170 knots
    Altitude: Less than 5,000 ft
170 kts is the Vno cruise speed for the C-47.
    A typical setting for 170 kts at 2000ft is 34" manifold, 2250 rpm, auto-lean.

    AIRCRAFT
    Gooney Birds (Douglas C-47 Skytrain).
We use version 2 of Manfred Jahn's C-47 that was published in October 2013.
(This supersedes version 1, sometimes called Basepack, that was published March 2011.)
Available as freeware on Storm's OneDrive, Vintage Hangar here.

    RESTRICTIONS
    C-47s only.

Please do not bring the DC-3 or the Basler BT-67.

    WEATHER
Server specified default is OK but may not be best.
Recommended: Real-world live weather generators, e.g. FSrealWX lite or Active Sky Next.
FSrealWX lite is freeware available in our TeamSpeak file browser. Why not try it?
Active Sky Next is payware, but currently on sale 20% off.
I will be using Active Sky Next.

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware ON SALE $6.47!).
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware, now 33% off!).
Vector users please see recommendations here.

RECOMMENDED SCENERY ADDITIONS FOR FTX GLOBAL USERS
You can download the whole series of freeware FTX global airport packs here.
NA packs relevant for this flight:
    • NA pack 9 (Departure airport KHSP)
    • NA pack 12 (First stop KRMN)
    • NA pack 19 (Second stop KJGG)

You can fly the Just Flight C-47 provided (a) you can maintain 170 kt cruise, and (b) you can perform ILS approaches if the weather is bad. You may like to download the one from my OneDrive anyway to compare; the instrumentation in the excellent VC is a little more modern and you may like it for some flights.

Reminder, diversion (new flight plan), and trivia! Bring your C-47 to KHSP at 9pm eastern. Due to widespread fog forecast at our final destinations, but not at the previous stop, we will divert and fly from KJGG>KENIR>KPGV without landing at KLFI, KFFA or KMQI. (No touch and go at Kitty Hawk, sorry.) See new flight plan files.

Trivia: Which famous Virginia native, a "little, cruel, bawdy, undisciplined brat", died in England just 7 miles from where the headquarters of Dovetail Games stands four centuries later. And what does that have to do with our flight? Answers and guesses during the flight tonight please!

Amazing shots guys, all of you! Razor, I felt like I was flying the journey again while flicking through yours. :eagerness:

I only have one, and everyone else's are far better. Thanks again, and hopefully the weather gods will be kinder next week.
