  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #10: Delaware - Zeppelins!

The first MSF group flight in Zeppelins!

    Week 10: Delaware
    KILG>KEVY>KDOV>KGED>KSBY

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • All legs VFR direct via GPS.
    • Final approach will be into wind.
    • Please check the flight plan for full details.
Download the PLN flight plan file here.
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
    Speed: 60 knots
Altitude: Low VFR (no obstructions en route above 500 ft)

    AIRCRAFT
    Zeppelin NTs only
Available as freeware on Storm's OneDrive, Modern Oddities Hangar here
    .
I also supply a patch that adds GPS, instead of Aerosoft payware, plus ASN WX radar.
Please read the README and short manual carefully to familiarize with the aircraft.
You will need to use the start-up sequence described there!
Please practice and get used to landing, taking-off and parking into wind, well ahead of time. :eagerness:

    RESTRICTIONS
    Airships only.

    THIS IS NOT A BLIMP!
The Zeppelin NT is a semi-rigid airship, the kind that are replacing blimps.
    • Airships/dirigibles are classified as non-rigid, rigid, and semi-rigid.
    • Both non-rigid and semi-rigid airships get their shape from internal gas pressure. Not so with rigid airships.
    • Blimps, such as the familiar old Goodyear blimps, are non-rigid airships with no internal structural framework or keel.
    • Historical Zeppelins were rigid airships. Their heyday ended with the Hindenburg disaster in 1937.
    • The Zeppelin NT, that we'll be flying, is a semi-rigid airship.
      • The NT in Zeppelin NT means "Neue Technologie", German for new technology.
      • It has an internal triangular truss made of graphite-reinforced plastic.
      • It has three longitudinal girders made of aluminium that connect the triangular elements along the length of the frame.
      • Its outer shape is maintained by internal gas pressure.
    • Goodyear is replacing its old fleet of blimps with Zeppelin NTs.
      • The first Goodyear replacement, completed in 2014 with tail number N1A (!) is "Wingfoot One" based in Suffield, OH.
    WEATHER
    Server specified default OK.
Real-world live weather generators such as FSrealWX lite or Active Sky Next OK.
FSrealWX lite is freeware available in our TeamSpeak file browser.
I will be using Active Sky Next payware.

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware).
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware).
Vector users please see recommendations here.

RECOMMENDED SCENERY ADDITIONS FOR FTX GLOBAL USERS
You can download the whole series of freeware FTX global airport packs here.

None of them are relevant to the plan. We're not flying blimps. We're flying zeppelins. All is explained if you read the first post in this thread.

If you had read it, you would not need to ask. The answer is in the first post in this thread.

I go to a LOT of trouble to prepare aircraft, plans and maps for these flights. It takes days to prepare each one. I think it's reasonable of me to expect that if you want to come along, you have the courtesy to read what I write. It's well written - even if I say so myself - and it'll only take you 5 minutes.

Trivia: What have the various parts of this image to do with our flight? Answers/guesses during the flight tonight please!
