  • D-Day 70th Anniversary Flight

Ok, So as it's the 70th Anniversary of D Day this year I was thinking we could do a flight in honour of this.

The flight would involve the aircraft used on D Day (C47, Spitfire, Hurricane, Typhoon etc).

The route would be from Fairford (EGVA) (An airfield used by C47s to transport troops to Normandy) to Caen-Carpiquet (LFRK) (One of the main airfields in the Normandy area)

Some aircraft which may be of interest:

    Manred Jahn's excellent C47: http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloa...ior-base-pack/
A Twin Spitfire and Hurricane package: http://simviation.com/1/browse-Vintage-66-18
    Hawker Typhoon: http://simviation.com/1/browse-Vintage-66-9

If you have any other aircraft that were used on D Day not listed here, feel free to use them!

If you have any other ideas/suggestions feel free to mention them.

Also it would be good if you could use an aircraft with a D Day livery, there are several repaints for the Manfred Jahn C47, Default DC3 and various other aircraft.

***DUE TO PROBLEMS WITH MY FSX HAVING FATAL ERRORS CAN I PLEASE REQUEST THAT THERE ARE NO B17s***

Hope to see you guys there!

I would like to propose a Friday Night Group Flight for 6 June 2014 from 9pm-11pm since your starting time of 8am-11am for a group is a bit too early for me.

The flight would be in C-47 GOONEY BIRDS, departing from Fairford (EGVA), flying over Omaha Bearch at St.Laurent-set-Mer the sight of the First operational D-Day airfield, and landing at Caen-Carpiquet (LFRK) nearby. From there we would fly over to the sight of the old Poupeville Airfield right next door to the Rouen (LFOP).
After a little research I found the FIRST emergency airfield used during D-Day was Poupeville which is next to Rouen (LFOP).

      Poupeville Airfield
Poupeville Airfield is a former World War II airfield, located 1.7 km southeast of Saint-Jean-de-Daye in the Normandy region, France. It was the first airfield established by the United States Army Air Forces in France, being constructed on D-Day, 6 June 1944.
I used the Lat/Long for the original airfield at Poupeville to find a present day airfield right next door in Rouen (LFOP). In fact you can still see the old airfield on Plan-G, right next to LFOP at Rouen.

That flight sounds good, however with me being in the UK, 9pm-11pm works out at 2am-4am which is obviously too late for me.

I wasn't clear about the time. It would be standard 9pm-11pm ET on Friday 6 June 2014, where we would change the time on the FSX server to fly during daylight.

9pm-11pm works out at 2am-4am for me in the UK, so I can't join the group flight (as much as I would like to!) so I'll have to just do this flight, I can alter the time slightly if required for people in different time zones.

Looking forward to this flight as I should be able to make it, WarbirdPilot have you finalised a flightplan for publishing? Maybe something that includes the beaches?

I have been working on a flight plan, I have been flying in the area picking out visual landmarks/navigation aids. I also plan to include a few formation passes over Lee On Solent (former RNAS Daedalus), where 8 DC3s/C47s have took off from today for a parachute drop over Normandy. I also plan to do formation flypasts of various landmarks (Colleville American Cemetery and Carentan)

I have been working on the flight plan for the flight. We will start from Fairford (EGVA) then fly down to Lee On Solent (Former RNAS Daedalus) (EGHF) to refuel ready for the flight across the channel. From here we will head for a waypoint just off the port of Ouistreham which brings us to the east of the 5 beaches. From here we will fly down the coast, over the beaches, using visual landmarks (I will inform you on teamspeak as we go). Once we reach the area west of the 5 beaches, we will do a flypast of the well known village Sainte Mere Eglise. From here we will fly to and do a flypast of the town Carentan. After this we will fly to and land at Caen-Carpiquet airport (LFRK).

If anyone is still stuck on aircraft to use may I recommend the Bristol Beaufighter from Storm's OneDrive, there are 2 schemes that contain D-day stripes.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!
