  • New Rank

I've been thinking about this for a while and I thought, why don't we have a rank for trusted and members that have been around for some time. As you may think this rank is called Trusted. With permissions such as moving people, kicking people to the Main Lobby, and create temporary channels. I hope you guys take this into account.

    Sincerely,
    Buuged

    Hey Buuged,

    Thanks for the post.

Firstly, Becoming a staff member is in fact that symbolic and public outward showing of our mutual level of trust with you as an individual that you have described. Your rank idea would add a layer on top of a simple system that has been extremely effective and has very little questions about what does what. I have pointedly always pushed the idea of simplification with the teamspeak in both channel structure and our ranking structure. We don't use a traditional ranking system that other groups tend to fall under where they have 3-8 different designations that are available. We keep things extremely simple so there is no doubt, no confusion, and we can focus more on why we are here, rather than what some silly icon means next to your name and how it effects your discussion with that individual.

This idea of having a certain "trusted member" access idea is not new. We have a senior member access area on the forums. While we don't have defined parameters or requirements for this forum access; It does become an opening of that door more-so of trust in which you described.

While this may not be the answer in which you had hoped for, let it be known that we do a very good job of keeping tabs on those who contribute and show passion for this community over periods of time and those that deserve something, obtain it.

I have actually thought about proposing to remove staff icons for this very reason. Displaying icons has some benefits but I feel like some long term members may feel like they are being left out. If there were no icons everyone would have to behave themselves because they wouldn't know who is undercover :highly_amused:

Good point Kalo, but if they don't behave even if they see badges on or in the channel, they wouldn't be any better if we were undercover. Senior trusted members, even non-badged, are our undercover spies, in my opinion.

I'm all for something along the lines of an unofficial group of trusted senior members, but not with badges/ribbons/fancy things that denote who they are. I made a similar point when someone asked about having VA rank badges on our TS server. I'll find that quote in a moment.
When God finally says, "King, my office. Now!" I want to go barreling in there half spun out with holes in my clothes, smoke rising from me, and my hair in a mess. I want to be busy. I don't want to go explain myself and not have a great story to go along with it.

"If we had badges for everything we'd soon begin to look like the Russian military (who seems to have a ribbon/medal for everything), and their uniforms look ridiculous! I'd rather not look ridiculous, even if they do know how to have a good time."

See the ribbons and medals on those guys? Yeah, that's what we'd eventually become if we had a badge for EVERYTHING. Again, I'm not against using senior/long time members as a group to be consulted on various things, but I don't think we need badges for it.

They can just click on a username and see what server groups are assigned.

I wonder if that was the original premise that inspired the 60's German character Colonel "Klink"?

Buuged, I like the premise of the idea. When you think about in a little more detail, it's administration makes it less attractive.

Thanks, Buuged, for your question, opinions and proposal. See how are respected members with their provoking questions and worthy ideas do get response from all, staff and members alike. At some point, however, effective discussions SOMETIMES are taken into staff and/or senior members forum where more free and somewhat private debate, consensus and plans for implementation can occur. Such a topic continuation MAY occur with your valid topic here in your OP.

Personally, I weigh in like this:

Not only has WarHawK successfully pushed his simplistic TeamSpeak structure philosophy, he has justified that look and feel to the satisfaction of most all of the badged staff and to any member that cares to listen to WarHawK's vision and rational. I am among the staunch supporters of TS simplicity as we evoke it here at FLIGHTS.net.

I personally would enter such a badge removal debate favoring removal. I might propose a single insignia for all staff. I would then be obliged to define how Virtual Airline managers and ATC administrators insignia might fit in with my concept.

Again, thanks for this thread, Buuged. Your thoughts and your words are not lost on us.

Now after reading these replies I can see why we don't have to many differents ranks.

And as I thought, trusted members are like the police and tutors for the younger and newer members.

I know it has been written above, but to spin the words as I so love to do:

The idea of badging in general is founded on good intent -- the hope that new participants (those that are seeing our TS3 structure for the first time) can easily recognize individuals to whom they can direct questions. To that extent, it's a worthwhile thing to have.

However, with this well-intended system has come much debate and many various levels of adoption. I've been that new guy on servers with so many badges that the image in Gimpy's post #6 above makes a remarkably good analogy. I remember that feeling of "oye vey," -- it wasn't a good first impression on me, and I use those feelings to justify the opinions I voice regarding our own approach to things. I don't discredit that particular community's use of badges -- clearly it works for them. I just prefer it a different way.

WarHawk is correct in his initial response indicating that the topic had been deliberated within our community before (as long ago as April, 2013). All of the points of view expressed in this thread had been equally represented then, too, which strengthens the idea that there is no single correct way to manage/utilize badges (more specifically, server groups). In fact, a forum poll vote resulted in a dead-even 50/50 split! And no, that's not a reference to SplitHorse, who was a major contributor to that thread.

So Buuged, I'm glad you're feeling out good topics of discussion -- it shows you're thinking along the right lines -- but, I believe that without new developments on the topic, there is little reason to modify the current structure.

                          Four points from me:
                          1. I'm not interested in adding new badges. Simplicity seems good to me.
                          2. I have no problem combining two or more existing badges into one, though I'm not convinced the existing system is broken.
                          3. I think removing all badges is a bad idea and would serve our members, especially newer members, poorly. Badges (or some other even simpler emblem) are an essential and speedy visual aid, showing whom to contact in case they need help.
                          4. Badges are NOT a symbol of status, so they cannot and should not be a form of recognition of, for example, longevity within the community. Badges are ONLY an indication that the person is in the lowly position of servant to the community and they've been lent a toolkit to help them serve.
