Thanks Travis but sadly no, I didn't make it back. As the video suggests it's a mystery, I didn't even see it. Had the game minimized for a couple minutes while I put on some music, then when I went back to the game I was shocked and mystified to find the "your ship was destroyed" screen...
No idea what happened, all I know is that it wasn't another player (real or AI) because it would have told me that.
