  • FSX Server Upgraded to i7 2600K @ 3.8 Ghz

The msFLIGHTS.net primary FSX multiplayer server has been upgraded to an Intel i7 2600K (Sandy Bridge) CPU computer @3.8 Ghz. The OS is Windows 7, The FSX boot drive is a 7,200 RPM SATA3 one Tb HDD. Also recently the FSX server router was upgraded to a fast and very stable Asus RT-AC66U Gigabite router. This last week we have doubled our cable internet bandwidth to 12 Mb/s upload, 50 Mb/s down. This desktop server will be in use by msFLIGHTS.net as it's primary FSX-FSOpen host until mid-summer. Please don't break it.

TeamViewer login is unchanged for this "BigBox" Win 7 FSX server from it's historical ID & PW, which is different from our previous FSX server TV login.

Its a long and amusing story which I'll share with you all sometime.
    Respects, Bob ...

Robert, the server runs magnificently! I did a flight earlier and it was very precise. I just wanted to say you put a ton of concentration into the FSX Server and server us very well. We all appreciate the dedication you put into MSFlights FSX Server.
          Thanks again Bob!

Robert, you need to cash in some vacation hours and stop putting in all this overtime( only if you got paid time and a half you would be a millionaire). Your screwing up the payroll lol. But seriously thank you for all you do.

                FSX host now 115 Mb/s down, 20 Mb/s upload available bandwidth (!?)

Per an email from Comcast, the most recent power outage must have reset my cable modem and thusly invoked a trial offer of yet greater bandwidth at our main residential FSX-FSOpen host. Bandwidth now measures 115 Mb/s down, a whopping 20 Mb/s upload. This is approximately another doubling of Comcast's previous doubling about a month ago. I will pay for this extra residential class bandwidth when the free trial expires in 3 months.

I would appreciate it if, in my forthcoming month long absence, you more technical pilots would investigate, via TeamViewer, the impact of this bandwidth increase on our FSX-FSOpen host's ability to handle packets.

We currently set a packet demand kick limit at 1000 packets per 30 second cycle. This 1000 packet setting permits all but the most packet demanding aircraft/configurations to stick. Captain Sim C-130, radios off and the more demanding cockpit sharing configurations are the common packet tolerance exceptions. With this most recent dramatic bandwidth increase, should we reexamine yet again our packet kick limit? What other FSX software specific limitations may affect this packet investigation? Could this bandwidth increase mean that we may become the greatest of the major independent FSX multiplayer communities based on not only population and class but also in brute capacity available?

HawgDawg, Wingman: Please note a forwarded Comcast bandwidth notice email by way of further explanation.
                Respects, Bob ...

Wow! That's some ridiculous speed!!! Wouldn't it be funny if all this effort to prevent packet flooding is proven moot by such unforeseen advancements in packet handling capabilities. . . Still, I'm amazed to see how the general gist of Moore's law continues to show itself (doubling every 6 months, even if we're not talking about transistors)!

Next question: Are you allowed to re-sell that bandwidth to your less fortunate neighbors?
Take the time, a second to soar; for soon after, beckons a second more.

If they keep raising your bandwidth it may be as good as google fiber ( witch I will be getting within the next year, can't wait). That is great!!!

                      That's an awesome increase! Sweet!

As far as the packet count I personally do not think it will help, as those packets go out to all players if I remember correctly, causing other players to have problems. Being that I'm stuck on a local line of sight wireless internet (my only other option is 1.5 Mbps DSL, while my backyard neighbor has Comcast), I appreciate not having to deal with all the packets for my connection. But even though my street is stuck in the stone age the rest of the world will advance.

Bandwidth speeds holding steady upon remeasurements

The previously published bandwidth speed test was done during "prime time". The ping was much higher than I had come to expect at 25 ms. This most recent test is done in the cool of the morning. The ping is in line with what I usually get here. The speeds seem to test constant and even increase 10% on upload. Cool beans, then.

I have left the FSX software configured for client use (sliders right, unlimited frames, aircraft etc.). Could some knowledgeable TeamViewer reconfigure the FSX host for server setup? (sliders left, tower roll, 10 FPS etc)? Could all of you FSX hosts that have TeamViewer power on the FSX host test again your ability to log on to the host? I am leaving again for Las Vegas tonight with no time to work on serving the community. When I return from Nevada I will be immediately boarding a Delta flight for Schiphol and almost completely drop out of contact. You guys have server maintenance from here on out. I authorize any currently capable FSX host TeamViewer to further empower other mods with the ID and password as may be necessary without my further approval. The server has been CMOS set to recover from any power outages to a powered on state. I have tested this CMOS change and it works. I will have only one more brief time on Wednesday to work on the server from the keyboard in front of it. Blizzard29 has a capable server in Las Vegas. Only Windows 8 version of WinPcap is installed. No FSOpen Server2 is downloaded nor installed. The FSX software is configured as client, not host. Could somebody who has the time contact Blizzard, TeamViewer in and preconfigure a backup or concurrent auxiliary msFLIGHTS.net FSX-FSOpen server? There is no alternate Pilot Assistant registered on Blizzard's machine. It will be start from scratch (except Win 8 version WinPcap). Blizzard can be contacted at brian.r.dunn29@gmail.com. Get Blizzard to share his cell phone number with admins when you contact him. Ban and admin list as well as all FSX host verbiage addresses and settings can be copied from the existing BigBox FSX host. Thank you. I'll stay in touch as much as I can but that will be sporadic and limited. Contact me at rsdunn2@msflights.net with a carbon copy email to rsdunn@yahoo.com.

Wandering the narrow, cobblestone alleys of Amsterdam, the architecture just like it was in 1610, entering a dimly lit cafe and playing Parcheesi...enjoy your well-earned vacation.
Things will be in good hands while you are gone, I'm sure.
