  • AIRACs

Just wanted some information, wasn't aware of AIRACs until I began doing airliner flights and I would have it where my FMC didn't have the SID/STARS the ATC was giving me. I found a website that updates AIRACs (1603 as of date creating this post) and wanted to know if anyone else does this. Here is the website.

The pros are obvious. With these you can keep all of the navigation data points up to date with the real world. There still cons. Each individual has to keep their sim updated. As a group we have a hundred different people with different skill levels operating here every month. The learning curve would be another thing to administer. As most of our group flight activities do not require such precise data points we get by with the stock FSX database.

If you were heavily into flying airliners with some VA it would be more vital. In our community it just is not as vital. If you do update your database there will be many times that you will have different intersections, VOR's and even ILS frequencies from everyone else. At some point we should perhaps have the conversation as a group about it. In the couple years that I have been part of the community it just hasn't come up.

I wonder if there is a quick and easy way to switch between up to date databases and the stock one. That would be handy for those that do both types of flying.

    Thanks for the question!

I've had a look and the process is not a quick and easy one to switch, bordering on a clean install to restore it. It also mentions significant issues with Add on scenery that may use base FSX/P3D data and ending up with conflicts in your nav systems.

I think it is incredibly awesome that someone is offering this for free (after inspecting Navigraphs subscription service for something very similar) but as Karl says, it depends on the type of flyer you are.

I am happy to stick with my 2007 data base thank you

In my recollection Razor is the one around here the most familiar with it. I haven't thought much about since the FS2004 days. I seem to recall updating and then reverting the database with his assistance. It was a manual process. Perhaps something that could be done via a batch file.

In the end I decided as you did, just stick with the 2007 database. I think it is Mike that keeps his navdata up to date because he flys a lot on VATSIM. He does on occasion have different waypoints than the rest of us during a group flight.

I have used the navdata from that website, and I still have it in an add on scenery folder that I activate during airline, and/or VATSIM/BVARTCC flights. However that would be the advisable way to do it, not installing it directly into the sim, just create an extra folder in the add on scenery folder, and activate it in the scenery library. Two of the biggest issues with installing all the data is: 1. It makes it difficult to coordinate when flying with other people(they see different intersections). So AICarriers is useless. And 2. For me it substantially increases my sim load time.

Overall worth it if you only fly airliners, else it's 50/50 in my opinion.
