  • Recording youtube videos

    Hi all,

I think I'm all "googled out" and come here for advice. I do have an unlisted youtube channel primarily for my flight videos I shared with friends. For a long time I used the paid version of FRAPS and the old windows movie maker 2.6 with the HD codecs I found on the Internet. That combination worked great for a long time.

All of a sudden I started get blue screens and computer shutdowns when trying to encode the FRAPS videos in movie maker 2.6
I did the usual uninstall/reinstalls. I even did a complete recovery of my system. Same thing. I see now MM 2.6 is no longer available on Microsoft downloads and the usual tech forums are stating my same issues so I am thinking that some windows update has essentially fubar'd MM 2.6

So someone here tells me to use movie maker 2012. I download Live Essentials. un-ticking the bloat-ware I won't need, and try it. On very short clips, it will work albeit in low definition. On longer clips, the encoding freezes. I also notice that, in spite of a direct youtube link in movie maker, it won't load (and I do have a Microsoft account). A check of the Google forums confirms this is an issue.

I try NVidia shadow-play but I have a 980M mobile GPU and even though I try the registry hack, I can't get it to work. GeForce forums confirm shadow-play is not supported in laptops.

Sooooo....I do another complete systems recovery to clean out the registry and anything else I did by installing/uninstalling so many programs and start again with a clean system. I do not have FRAPS or anything else installed. I opened an imjur account and take screen-shots natively to post a couple screen shots yesterday.

    Here is my system:

    Clevo P770ZM laptop
    Intel 4790K CPU (desktop cpu)
    NVidia 980M GPU
Two M-2 SSD's......Windows 7 Pro on the Sata 6 m2 and the flights sims on the SM951 pcie drive
Two Samsung 1TB SSD's for storage

The only things on this machine is FSX Steam and P3D v3.1

My goal is to simply record high definition flight sim videos to my youtube channel. I am fine paying for software as long as it works. Any suggestions and recommendations are appreciated. Thank you in advance for your help.

I use bandicam to record it works great and there is a free version if you wanted to try before you buy the full version.

      LITTLE KNOWN FACT ALERT!
FSX has a video recorder built in.

It doesn't have a key assigned as default.
So assign a key to start stop recording and videos are saved in your my documents folder.
If you don't use BOINC or World Community Grid then you should!

Edd, Thank you. I'll try the demo version.

ATC_ROO, I didn't know that. I got into settings and assigned a key to it. The problem was it dropped my frame rate so bad that my flying was a slide show. The 2 1/2 second video was a 10.6GB avi file. I'm sure I did something wrong but will research it. Thank you for the information.

          No that's probably right.
I do now remember the videos being very large when I used it many years ago.

Thank you ATC_ROO....I still appreciate your help.

Edd, I tried Bandicam demo. In spite of trying every setting down to the lowest resolution, it dropped my FPS from 30 to mid teens. The file sizes were great however. The only thing I can think of is that I'm asking my laptop to do to much. While it may have a desktop CPU it's still a mobile GPU. I run the sim right on the edge. It flies and looks great for me as the end user. I could probably unload a lot of the eye candy so I'd have more headroom for in-game capture but I hate to give up the experience while flying.

This may be a case of not recording my own videos but rather enjoying the videos of others until I am in the position to build a good desktop.

I want to thank both of you for your suggestions and help.

              Hi Captain Duke,

Sorry to say this but bottom line, you need a non-mobile GPU. Without that, when it comes to FSX/P3D this is academic.

The rest of your setup would serve you quite well for recording but you need the headroom of an actual desktop GPU.

I personally use a mixture of ShadowPlay (primary) and the DVR built into Windows 10. BandiCam took too much room from my CPU and RAM whereas the other two utilize the GPU RAM very efficiently. I have a second GPU in non SLI which helps with this by taking the load of recording while the first manages the sim itself.

May I suggest looking at the GTX780Ti and above range for your GPU purchase.

I would suggest you 2 Programs that I have used in the past, which both are great!

                Payware:
                Note: it's quite expensive
Camtasia Studio (Recorder & editor) https://www.techsmith.com/camtasia.html

                Freeware:
                Open Broadcaster Software (Recorder)

The difference between Camtasia & OBS is that Camtasia is used for recording and video editing, And the editing features is fantastic and easy to use. You can download the trial version from their website if you like. Open Broadcast Software (OBS) is for recording & live streaming. It can record in HD, once done recording the file isn't too large compared to some other recording softwares.

Thank you Novawing24.....I subscribe to your channel so I appreciate your expertise and advice.

Trixter36....I'll try the trial of Camtasia although, to quote Ron White, I'll have to sell a lot of shrimp from my van to afford it
                  I'll also check out OBS.

I tend to think Novawing24 is describing my issue with hardware as my problem.

I'll take a break tonight and try again tomorrow. I really appreciate the help from all of you and will try all your recommendations.

Nova is right. I recently learned that the naming of video card on laptop is deceptive. A 980M is nothing like a 980 used in desktop machines. You can always compare card capability at www.hwcompare.com

Oh my.....it's a huge jump from where I am to Novawing24's recommendation. Thank you Karl for your help.

Well, that answers my questions on why I'm having troubles. The laptop is necessary because I fly on the dining room table in a small apartment in the boonies. Someday I'll get a bigger place and a screaming desktop machine.

Thank you all......I learned a lot today.

Just wait for the new laptops with desktop GPU's in them, they are a little pricey right now, But like all things the price will go down eventually

                          Thanks Cube,

I briefly considered that while looking at this: https://www.mythlogic.com/2015_Models/phobos8715s.php
A 6700K desktop CPU and a 980 desktop GPU squeezed into a laptop.

However, what I want and what I need are 2 different things so I think I've resigned myself to not making my own videos for a while. I just keep my eye on the prize

Thank you for your suggestion, I appreciate it.
