Using Prepar3d v3 everytime I flew the Duke for a few minutes I got suffered a system lock up & the blue screen of death. In troubleshooting I found that it did not occur with the Mooney Acclaim. Whether active sky (ASN) was running or not made no difference with either aircraft. Finally, the last time it occurred when the system restarted the BIOS gave me an error indicating that the system had overheated.
The system is about 2 years old. I cleaned it …. maybe last fall or winter. The interior of the case really looked reasonably clean as did all of the fan blades. There was some evidence of dust but nothing bad. Then I looked at the fins underneath the fan for the CPU. About 1/3 of them were clogged with dust. Using a can of spray duster I cleaned those area and all of the fan blades.
20 minutes into a flight with the Duke & ASN running I haven’t had an issue. I’ve also noted specifically in the past 3-4 days that the system seems bogged down with something. Watching the speed of things while opening web pages, using Teamspeak, and typing this I have seen no issues.
Lessons learned. Obviously more routine cleaning of the CPU heatsink is necessary. The RealAir Duke makes the system work for its money!
Hopes this helps someone avoid issues in the future.
