  • Idleline86

It is with great sadness that I must pass on the news that our dear friend Idleline86, known to many of us as Doug, passed away this evening in a hospital near his home in Huntsville, Alabama. Doug had been hospitalized since being diagnosed with a form of cancer called poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. It is my intention to host a memorial flight for Doug, though after any funeral or memorial services are held. Our community is so much the poorer for losing him.

A great loss to us all.

Doug was an inspiration to many, including myself. His simple quiet presence and confidence was always a pleasure to encounter.

He will be greatly missed. My thoughts go with him and all of his family, immediate and extended.

Awww. C'mon. Why do the good ones have to go? I was honored to have met and socialized with this man. He will be missed. May his final flight to the heavens be an enjoyable journey.

Thank you Storm for keeping us updated. I know you two were very close and that Doug wanted to meet you in person from the great experience you two had together. Stay strong my friend. I will miss him a lot as well. Doug and I were good friends and spent lots of time in space together both learning how to play Elite Dangerous. I have lots more things to say about Doug, but I will wait for the group flight instead. I enjoyed every minute I had hanging out with him and will greatly miss him as I am sure his family and our community will too. I will see you in the skies good friend.

I am very saddened by the news of Doug's passing. Doug was more than a friend, he was an inspiration to me and many others. The thing that always impressed me the most about Doug McFarland is that through all the tribulations that he had been through in his life, he was still able to maintain a level of self respect and moral presence that I personally can only strive for. Doug will undoubtedly be missed here and abroad. I will be at that memorial flight.

RIP, my dear friend. Fitting words of condolence, to Doug's loved ones and to this community of his friends fail me at this moment. Maybe later.

                            Because I fly
I laugh more than other men,
I look up and see more than they,
I know how the clouds feel.
What it's like to have the blue in my lap,
                            to look down on birds,
to feel freedom in a thing called the stick.

Who but I can slice between God's billowed legs
and feel then laugh and crash with His step.
Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks?
                            The rainbow's secret?
                            The real reason birds sing?
                            Because I Fly,
I envy no man on earth.
