  • GREAT 48! COMPETITION: How far will we have flown?

How far will we have flown when we complete the Great 48! grand tour this week?
    Please do both these things:
    1. Vote with your approximate estimate in the poll above.
    2. Post your exact estimate below.
Your estimate should exclude our special Alaska-Hawaii holiday flight (which was 2442 nmi/2810 mi extra).

The correct answer and the winner (nearest answer) will be announced during our final Great 48! flight on Wednesday August 26th.

    Notes:
    • The main figures in the poll are in nmi (nautical miles), familiar from navigation in FSX.
    • The figures in brackets are in mi (statute miles) familiar from conventional maps and Wikipedia articles.
    • 1 nmi = 1.151 mi (approx).

Here is a map of our entire route across the lower 48 US states. Click on the map for full size.

If we are speaking about direct, I would estimate 9,600 miles, however if you include all the intersections I would say somewhere closer to 11,000 miles... so I answered 8.5-10k

I assume you mean the distance obtained by adding up the all the flight plans distances, and not the actual distance each has flown when we are wandering all around the place. Can anyone recall if we ever did any additional flying not contained in the flight plans?

Coast this distance does not account for any time you got lost. Or Nova or PR's bridge dives. So yes, adding up flight plan distances (detailed versions if we followed a road or river) would give you the figure.

Ya, I'll take the over: 12010 nm. Not counting bridge diving!~

With that in mind 11,693.8 nm is my official guess

Good guesses guys. The official answer is: 11,575 nautical miles (13,320 statute miles).

We passed 11,500 nmi as we crossed the Wynoochee River, 11 nmi before touchdown at KHQM at the end of our third leg.
