So following it up....
New Avatar mode...
Oculus support built right in. No need for 3rd party utilities to get it to work now. That's sweet. While it worked, it was a PITA!
Optimized texture unloading during loads - That will be huge for overcoming OOM errors.
Support for SpeedTree models (which have wind animations) sounds VERY interesting. I wonder how well it will work with say ORBX scenery.
Overall some interesting things... And it comes out on payday for me... We'll have to see.
And yes... Pete Dowson is on holiday again....

It's v3. Cool. I was excited to see it. But after 4-5 minutes of looking I'm a little concerned as I don't see the type of enhancements that would warrant the v3. So far it seems that it should be 2.6 instead. I'll keep looking tomorrow. I'm sure I am missing something.

I've been with them since version 1. To a certain extent I agree with Karl that it could have been version 2.6 which would have made it a free update rather than a paid upgrade because I see the word "fix" a feature more than a "new" feature.
However, I will pay the money willingly because Lockheed is actively developing the platform and their people have to eat and support their families. I think that it is exciting that both DTG is developing FSX Steam to the extent licensing permits and also developing their new flight sim alongside Lockheed with Prepar3D. Competition brings about innovation and we reap the benefits.
I'm looking forward to flying Prepar3D version 3.“We deliver anything to the people there—food, mail, the morning paper, the afternoon paper, laundry, refrigerators, Christmas trees, just about anything that will fit in an airplane.”

I have gone over the list of "features" for P3Dv3 and I agree with Karl. This is P3D2.6.
Whilst I am certain the developers have put in an extraordinary amount of work, I do not see the benefits of renewing my licence fee for what is for the most part bug fixes.
If I was an Oculus Rift user different story but as I am not I will continue for now with my 2.5. (I am not paying $199.95 for trees that move that may or may not work with my addons.... I will go fly in MS Flight for them)

Lots and lots of bug fixes listed on the release notes... actually, mostly bug fixes. New content is the old Virtavia/AlphaSim Blackhawk, Dino's freeware F-35, and some tree models? What a joke... full price for what should be a patch?Facebook: www.facebook.com/msflights

Here's another one with PMDG aircraft, Orbx NorCal and FlightBeams KSFO v2. Note the settings and VAS level at the end:
PMDGs Robert Randazzo has made an announcement in which he describes some of the changes made to the core engine and what we can expect. It seems that lots of efforts have been made to make it more smooth and performance-friendly, even at high slider settings and heavy add-on usage. If you remeber that v3 also features Oculus-Rift-Support, which needs at least 75 FPS, there might be a reason for all this.
For now, for me it seems like this is a much bigger update than you might see at first, while maintaining backward-compatibility (no 64 bits needed). v3 is so much different that it will be impossible to just install it on top of v2 but to have an entirely new installation. Still, all your v2 add-ons will be compatible to v3 as well though. LM is leading another big step into the future of MSFS, which DTG yet has failed to prove with their ambitions.[COLOR="#808080"]Bests,

Thanks, Waterman and other commenters. At least client-side, I'm in on the release date at sixty U.S. bucks. Captain Duke speaks my mind in his post #4.
If v3 client is multiplayer compatible with a v2.5.12946.0 (hotfix 4) host-server, I'll NOT re-purchase a second license to v3 for server use. If v3 client requires a v3 server for multiplayer compatibility, I'll take a vote of existing P3D multiplayer pilots (both of us) and continue to run a P3D server at a version compatible with such a vote.
My real life continues to demand my fullest attention and as a result, I'll need a few extra days to establish inter-version multiplayer compatibility.Respects, Bob ...

From what FroogleSim (Pete) showed in his video last night I think that if anything my granddaughter will be buying it It sure does seem that a discounted price for previous purchasers would be warranted from a supply and demand perspective.

Looking at all the posts on AVSIM gets me thinking that the 9 years since FSX was released has "clouded" a lot of folks judgement when it comes to paying for it. I mean here were the previous releases:
1996 – Flight Simulator 95
1997 – Flight Simulator 98
1999 – Flight Simulator 2000
2001 – Flight Simulator 2002
2003 – Flight Simulator 2004: A Century of Flight
2006 – Flight Simulator X
Each time you were paying full price for the new version. This is no different, and about the same timeline. Like I said, there has been nothing since FSX so nothing to pay for. I think one of the important things with Prepar3D v3 is that it means the end of development of 2.x... So moving forward is just like in the past Microsoft releases (and every other software package out there).

Waterman, indeed I see your point however we are not talking $50 here we are talking $199.95. Now for flight schools and business that's just a drop in the ocean but for the rest of us it's a bit steeper.
So possibly the work around is to get Karl's granddaughter to purchase a whole heap of licences I suppose :monkey:Per Ardua Ad Astra

May I briefly report a smooth and successful purchase, download, installation and brief test flight of PREPAR3D version 3.0.10.14945 ? Unfortunately, I can not successfully connect my version 3 multiplayer client with the community's version 2.5.12946 P3D host server at IP 72.193.30.48.
I will leave the P3D v2.5 server running for the next week for testing purposes. If I can temporarily move the community's FSX Steam North America to another member's server configuration, I will additionally and temporarily run a P3D v3 server off of my client installation for testing purposes. After such multiplayer testing, it is my intention to seek from the P3D interested community members counsel on the future of msFLIGHTS.net's P3D multiplayer hosting. I will purchase a second Academic P3D license to host such a version 3 server if that is the community's desire. If there can be coordinated with a P3Dv3 early adopter to run a brief multiplayer connection test to see if P3Dv2.5 client will connect to P3Dv3 host, that would be appreciated. I cannot perform such a test from my current location in Seattle as my FSX-P3D common router ports are forwarded to our FSX Steam North American server 24/7 (at all times). In summary, in one brief test, I cannot connect my version 3 client to BigBox version 2.5 server. I can still successfully and normally connect my version 2.5 client to this same version 2.5 server as expected. I have both v2.5 and v3.0 client installed. I'l like to try to connect my v2.5 client multiplayer to some new v3 installation configured temporarily as a P3Dv3 server.
For purposes of Lockheed's EULA, I will continue to consider myself an avid student of aviation at the undergraduate flight school level and will therefore continue to qualify myself for and purchase the Academic version of PREPAR3D for sixty U.S. dollars, both server and client.
Initially, I am impressed with P3Dv3. I immediately notice considerably increased graphic performance (10 to 15 percent better frame rates at slightly higher graphics settings). The software in its virgin unmodified installation is stable in situations where my unmodified v2.5 installation exhibited intermittent sim crashes and flight control system hangs. The graphic appearance is considerably brighter at default settings than the too-dark v2.5 brightness. The Speed Trees are the best vegetation animation I have ever seen, Microsoft Flight trees and Orbx HD Trees included. More early adopter details later as my version 3 experience accumulates. Other first day purchasers, please comment further here.Respects, Bob ...
