  • P3D v5

So Prepar3d v5 on April 14th. I may get this one even with msfs coming since I skipped v4. Thoughts?

P3D is my sim of choice. I own X-Plane 11 and I'm an alpha tester for FS2020 (or FSXX as Coast has christened the new Microsoft offering). I don't fly X-Plane 11 much (nor my DCS library for that matter) because I'm just too lazy to invest the time to become proficient in them. I've not fired up my Steam FSX nor my FSX boxed installations in over a year. I'll personally get P3Dv5 when it is released. I'll buy FS2020 also on its release date. I probably won't update X-Plane 11 to 12 until I have the time and interest to devote to my simulatiors. Being retired doesn't mean what one might think it means, sometimes.

I have not heard of this P3D upgrade until I read your OP. For that heads up, thanks Waterman.

Yeah, I got a notification from a web site about it last night as I was getting in bed, so hastily posted on my phone.

So official post about it here: https://prepar3d.com/home-slider/2020/04/115906/ including a trailer.

From what I've seen the big things are:
      • DirectX 12
      • Clouds (from how I've read them described it reminds me of Flight)
      • Sloped runways (Would you want to replace default sloped runways with payware airports with old flat runways? Of course not sure of 24,000 airports (that have been corrected with new data) if they've sloped the runways with them.)
Definitely seems worthwhile as I'm back on v3. And possibly for those who may not be able to stream the scenery from MSFS2020. (I did just upgrade to gigabit downloads, so I should be fine there.)

I'm going to keep my eyes on reports from the P3D v5 beta testers who it looks like have had their NDA lifted now and can talk about it.

Waterman, please, direct me to info on your comment in your last line of your post #3 here. I'd love to speak on your comment about scenery streaming in MSFS2020 when NDA permits me to.

I guess that wasn't clear, I meant the beta testers of Prepar3d v5, who have had their NDA lifted. Not the Alpha testers of MSFS who are still under NDA. (And as I'm not in the alpha, so have only seen that it's been publicly stated there is default scenery with MSFS, but the advanced photoscenery it sounded like is streamed.)

As I've done additional reading today one of the interesting ones was a quote from a FSDreamTeam developer about DX12. https://www.avsim.com/forums/topic/5...omment=4205419

The aspect getting me thinking most of all is PBR available for all textures, including all the ground textures. You see it in the runway in the trailer. But add that to the grass textures of the airport (which on the ground I still think the grass shown publicly for MSFS looks amazing)... then those airport textures get placed against the other land class textures... I would think Orbx FTX Global (or whatever they are calling it now), without PBR textures would then look flat. If P3Dv5 is popular I could see Orbx completely reworking it, but I'm sure that amount of work would carry a cost.

Definite engine improvements that will take years to be fully realized.

Also I saw a video on the water technology they are using. Not water in P3Dv5 itself, but it was amazing waves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ccdVcICW0Jg Just imagining how that would affect water landings...

Thanks for the clarification on your NDA comment. I was reading your comments hastily and the error in perceiving who's NDA was lifted may have been mine. You've edited your post on NDA for clarification so I can't reread and analyze the source of my misunderstanding. I will, however, remain tight-lipped about MSFS2020.

Again, I intend to purchase P3Dv5 on its release date and I'll share my opinions on P3D soon as I have opinions. I will then have P3D versions 3, 4 AND 5 installed on my machine. I still have a hotfix for P3Dv4 yet to install but I've just been too busy to keep my sims updated. Flying four or five times a week in multiplayer here is all (more?) the time that I've got for this passion.

Thanks for the analysis and links on P3D. It really helps me. I've read the release notes for P3Dv5 but I've not taken time to do any analysis of others' efforts and information. I'm supposed to be shampooing the carpets and fixing plumbing but neither is going very fast. Having everybody home and under foot is a net minus rather than a help.

Here is a article I found where they show which developers are planning to support v5 for free or not. I'm glad to see that A2A said all of their v4 aircraft will work on v5: https://fselite.net/originals/live-a...compatibility/

Looks like FSUIPC will be going to version 6, and 5 will not longer be for sale. https://forum.simflight.com/topic/89...red-from-sale/

Has anyone tried v5 yet? I watched some videos where it looked like it was running pretty well and the guy said he could turn the graphics up noticeably higher. I'm not sure if it's worth the upgrade though, especially if fsXX actually does come out in late 2020.

Kalo, I intend to get version 5 in the next week. I am, however, prioritizing house maintenance (2 houses) since I have my son and granddaughter looking for chores. Honey is definitely NOT looking for chores. I'll report version 5 performance on my high end flying computer when I do install v. 5. Lazerbolt and Coast keep me plenty busy most evenings with their more frequent group flights also.

To be honest, I have been rather disappointed with it. I have been in the Beta for a while, and while there are some improvements, the core sim still looks like it is from 2006.

Don't get me wrong, the addition of TrueSky is great, but its implementation is experimental and buggy at best. The addition of sloped runways is cool and all, but its ugly and brute forced in, not elegant like X-plane's implementation.

The inclusion of PBR throughout the entire sim, and most sim and ground objects, is great but seems like it was pushed through just to say its all in PBR.

There is some update to ground textures, but if you didn't know to look for the changes, you would not see it. Landclass is still out of date, and while the media line says 26000 airports updated, thats more to say they have PBR runway textures, not actual updates. My local airports are still the same, if not worse than they were. However, some new airports have made it in (YBWW for example) though their accuracy leaves a lot to be desired.

TL;dr: You still need an awful lot of tweaking and addons to make it look good. If you already have a solid functioning P3Dv4.5 installation.... I would not be rushing to buy it.

Thanks, Nova. I reached and tried to use the PREPAR3D.COM product "add to cart" button in the "Store" tab but that button wouldn't connect. I've had problems activating other version installations for P3Dv4 previously. I always have to "activate from another computer", which is time consuming, bothersome but always successful. Per Nova's above "review-ette", I think I'll just shelve my version 5 enthusiasm for a while and write Lockheed's licensing department a request for help sometime soon. I'm just too busy for this kind of purchase and license activation problems.

Thanks for the feedback Nova, did you notice any significant performance increase (such as more fps or being able to turn the graphics up higher than 4.5)?

I could push the graphics marginally higher, but FPS is the same. And given that is comparing v5 with no addons vs 4.5 with everything from Orbx plus Rex SkyForce, I am not impressed.

for those who are interested, my detailed first impressions and opinion of the current state of the v5 release.

If you don't want to go through it in detail, skip to 1 hour in for the TL;DR version.
