  • All new aircraft for Microsoft Flight

So some people have done it! They have successfully created a new plane for Microsoft Flight! They've made the Republic RC-3 Seabee, and although it's still a work in progress, it still looks very nice. Plus it's a massive step forward in Flight. Here are a few pictures.

    In hangar

    On the runway

A bit of a view of the cockpit

    A real Seabee for comparison

I definitely see this as a big step forward in making new planes for Microsoft Flight. This is just the beginning!

Is that the picture quality on the wings or is that the actual in game quality?

From what I see that is actual in game... but it does look to me like it's low resolution (looking at the backgrounds). If I remember right the guy making it, MVGibbage was a MS Flight developer. So he probably has some knowledge of the inner workings... And it'll be a freebie! Hopefully they can share the info as to how they did it so others can create even more.

And this post is interesting (in that same forum):
I fiddle with a bunch of things, but most of them are for fun at this point. Not sure how much will actually make it to final products. My progress so far includes:

          - Adding DEM (it is the same format as FSX)
          - Basic conversion of FSX MDLs to Flight Models
          - Basic conversion of FSX MDL material and textures
          - Converting FSX OBX placements to Flight OBX placements
          - Changing the map to show the whole world (but everything other than Hawaii and Alaska show up as water since there is no art for it)

I'm currently working on converting FSX aircraft to Flight. So far I have a large portion of the model and animations converted, and some of the physics, but I still have a long way to go.

If this get's mainstreamed, and supported by microsoft, it would literally change the face of the game. As long as it sticks to freeware of course.

Now if only someone can make the world, and more people in one session!
              If it ain't Boeing — I ain't going.

If you saw above, Stonelance (another person from the original MSF team) is working on making the whole world on the map. After that, I would guess that someone needs to create the scenery. Then we got the whole world!

As for the sessions, I think we're kind of stuck with that. 16 players to one session isn't ideal, but we gotta make the best of it.

Well, maybe we could make some kind of FSOpen type software for Flight (If flight actually becomes something that we could use with third party products) that would expand the number of pilots in one session? I don't know how this stuff works but, could it be possible?

Given their track record, I would actually prefer if Microsoft stayed out of this.

Yeah if MSFlight went full open source, I think most people would reinstall the game because of the updated, optimized graphics. The only downfall would be the lack of servers, which would hold a lot of aspects back.

Echo ak there. If my memory hasn't totally taken it's leave, I recall this SeaBee as a creation of gamertag M.V. Gibbage (Kevin Miller I think, a fellow Woodinville neighbor). He did subcontract work for Microsoft Flight and I believe he had a de Havilland Beaver of some model ready to release in MS Flight when Microsoft pulled the plug. I sure would like to see that platform reemerge it's active development but not, as ak says, under anything having to do with Redmond.

Supported was a bad word choice. Given the OK would be more accurate. Since it's on their server and system, if they don't condone it, they can probably shut it down.

Yeah, with the Games for Windows Live components of Flight, I agree with you. I doubt we will ever see the 16 person limit go up. The only way I can think is if someone replaced it completely in the code for another service/system. Seeing what the community has done with Game Spy sucking for years makes me highly doubt anyone would a) be that ambitious b) not receive a cease and desist from Microsoft.

I would be open to Microsoft interaction with flight, I think that if Microsoft said here are the tools. go nuts. But I also have an idea to keep the games for windows live connection open (however I really feel that Microsoft would not take it off line due to the fact that is piggy backing off the same servers that all gwfl games run on as well as a few Xbox games.) i would be very interested to see what happens with this. I hope that a repeatable method is formed for this i am thinking realair lancair in Microsoft flight.
