Can you change a config file so the view defaults to a spot further back? That way when you press backspace to center the view, it doesn't jump back out to 10' in front of the cockpit.

That was the only way I could fly the "non-cockpit" models in flight. I had to back up into the seat so I could get the right feel.

MS Flights Tips and Tricks
Here is a well/little known fact about MS Flight aircraft that do not have cockpits. In reality Flight puts you about 10 ft out in front of the the aircraft. However, using the center mouse button and rotating the viewpoint down, it allows you to "move back" into a STATIC cockpit where the gauges are only decoration (not functional).
Below is the static cockpit of the C-46.
