  • Question about performance

Hey all, just wondering what the performance has been like during your time with Elite: Dangerous. I am just below the minimum specs and was thinking of picking it up, but I really don't want to spend $60 on something I won't be able to play. Here are the minimum system requirements and my pc specs.

    Minimum:
    Quad Core CPU (4 x 2Ghz)
    4 GB RAM
    Nvidia GTX 260 / ATI 4870HD

    My PC:
    Q6600 @ 2.4ghz
    3GB DDR2
    HD 5750 1GB

Think I'll be able to enjoy it with these specs, or should I wait for the PS4 version? Thanks for any input you can give!

I might actually be able to give you a good baseline, since I just recently downloaded it (have not yet installed it) onto my Q6600/Vista-32 (3GB readable memory) computer. It has a previous generation graphics card, the 9800 GTX+. I'll see what I can get with it this evening.

Shoot; installing now and just noticed my system tray icons reminding me that I've overclocked this Q6600 to 3.0GHz on speedboost (333.33 x 9 at 1.2375v). I'm wondering if anyone out there is running E;D on a lesser machine... maybe a Vista-era laptop, or something... Oh, wait! I have an Vista-era laptop! Hang on a sec!

That laptop struggles to run FSX at minimum settings, though, so I'm not nearly as optimistic about that machine as I am this Q6600-based desktop. Either way, I'll at least be able to (hopefully) Elite anywhere I want to now!

P.S.- The 'Sync Files' stage of installation reminds me of super-cruising away from a large (read: massive) planet. accelerating out of .02 Mb/s takes FOREEEEEVER (about 7 minutes), during which time the installer/launcher tells me the estimated time to completion is 17 hours. But, then it accelerates pretty darn quickly to my full bandwidth pipe.

Oh, that reminds me; do you still have to compete with that crappy monthly download cap, AK?

Negative on the monthly cap, was finally able to find a competing ISP that offered up/downloading that was comparably reliable/fast.

Very interested to see how she runs, I've actually been reading some promising things about performance so I'm pretty optimistic. I'm ok with running things at the lowest settings, so long as it actually runs.

Well, the short of it is: It runs!

The long of it is... video uploading to YouTube right now.

Display resolution was 1366x768 (not your typical 1080 display resolution because I have that computer on a 720p 19" TV). Frame rates were in the 30-50 range (slightly lower when Fraps was recording). There were some moments of stutter, most noticeably towards the end, when the starport services menu loaded. This, too, might have been attributed to making the old hard drive do two things at once. Graphics settings were on "Low."

            Edit: Video below...

Excellent! I'm surprised it runs so well with fraps recording! I think I'll pick it up. Thanks very much for the benchmark, you really didn't have to go through all that trouble, though I'm glad you did.

What resolution was this running at, btw?
