ENB Series Flight Simulator X - How to install and obtain cool HDR lighting tutorial below:

The image at the top shows the difference between default FSX (right) and FSX with ENB Series enabled (left).
If your computer is not powerful enough to run FSX in DX10 mode with Bloom enabled, or you are bored of the default lighting in FSX, you can easily add a very cool mod in FSX which adds HDR lighting and dynamic shadows to the simulator. The mod is called ENB Series and it is based on a modified version of the DX9 dll which forces HDR and many effects in games which do not support it by default. The mod was originally developed for GTA game, but works very well in FSX.

Good part at this mod is that it improves the visual quality of Flight Simulator X without a heavy toll on frame rates. I could argue that the effect is even better than the one obtained if you enable Bloom and DX10 mode in FSX, but, at least on my configuration the frame rate remains the same when ENB series is enabled. Besides the visual impact you will also notice a interesting effect, if you look at the cockpit instruments and then raise your view to the sky, you will notice how the light dims out, similar as your eye iris will close to adapt to the increase amount of light. This adds a nice effect as the simulation would have actually been a movie, and the camera would have adjusted to light when moved from the dashboard to the windshield/sky.

How to install ENB Series in either FSX or FS9

    1. Download the mod from Mediafire.
    http://speedskater.ru/download/arccv...e_for_MSFS.rar

    2. After the .rar file is downloaded, extract and copy the two files (d3d9.dll and enbseries.ini) in the FSX/FS9 main folder (same place where fsx.exe/fs9.exe is located).

    3. You will need to replace the config in enbseries.ini with one that is best suited for the simulator (default one is provided for GTA). Open enbseries.ini with Notepad and replace the content with the configuration. I use the one provided on this post:

    4. Start FSX and start a flight. To start/stop the mod press anytime SHIFT+F12; the game autoloads the mod.*

To uninstall the mod just delete the two files you copied from your simulator installation directory enbseries.ini and d3d9.dll.

    Enjoy!

    Known issues:
If the ENB Series does not work in FSX or you see black squares, clouds, etc with the mod enables, check if you have two monitors connected to the computer. This mod does not support multi monitor setup on some configuration. Just disconnect the secondary monitor and restart the simulator and it should work.

Use the mod at your own risk. I did not encountered any issues with it but you may never know!

If this really helped your FSX experience post your in-game pics and say thanks in this post.

As a side note if you are running DX10 there is a mod just like ENB (as ENB is DX9 only) called SweetFX (which is actually DX9, DX10, & DX11 compatible). Here's a thread on AVSIM where it is discussed: http://forum.avsim.net/topic/389455-...-this-sweetfx/

    I'm happy with it's results.

Also SweetFX can be used for all sorts of other DX10 games such as Skyrim, but I know EA was banning people for using it with BF3.

I have to say I discounted this post at first because it read like an ad! :suspicion:

However, in my quest to improve my FSX experience, and having watched several YouTube videos showing convincingly real and attractive graphics, I identified three things that would help. One of these was ENBseries, and using a forum search I rediscovered this thread and very quickly did the installation.

So now I have REX (while on 50% discount), ENBseries (free), and Shade (cheap), and the result of these combined is a league apart in quality from the FSX default. Thanks Angel for contributing to that.

Shade was running using the preset called "A Brighter Light". (Like REX, there are lots of presets.) You have the ability to build your own too.

I got Shade from flightsimstore.com for a little over $10. It's a very small install, and it provides four programs:
                          1. Runtime that starts FSX
                          2. Runtime that waits for up to 30 seconds waiting for FSX to start. (Useful when running FSX via REX.)
                          3. A GUI that allows you to select or build light, shadow or fog for different hours of the day and different sequences of days.
                          4. A palette builder that allows you to build whole color palettes for light, shadow and fog.

Be warned that the download triggered my avast! antivirus with a suspected detection of Win32:Evo-gen. I checked with flightsimstore and they assured me it was a false positive, so I allowed the install. It turned out that it was just one module - the palette builder (4 above) - that was causing it.

I like running Shade all the time, and that's the way it installs anyway. There's no facility for switching it on and off while FSX is running but that doesn't bother me. By contrast ENB can be toggled on and off while running FSX (and starts off), so you can decide whether or not to run it or keep running it - though most of the time it's on anyway for me, as well as Shade.

Yeah I think I'll have to give it a go. The screenshot I really liked from FlightSimStore is this one:

Those shadows in the canyons is awesome! I do hear it's a bit like you are wearing sunglasses... the tint even affects the cockpit. But at $10 why not try it.

Yeah, it's very good for mountainous areas. And since I live next to the Rockies, flying over mountains is naturally something I like doing a lot. That kind of flying might not be to everyone's taste though, so I took more general screenshots. (I like the effect it has on clouds too, especially in conjunction with ENB.)

The effect on mountains is echoed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0E_...I&t=3m36s&hd=1 where the narrator discusses worthwhile add-ons, REX being his #1 and Shade #2.
