  • How to use Skyvector to create Flight Plans and Routes 101

    Welcome to Angel's Ground School:

In this tutorial well be covering some of the basics of Air Navigation, Dead Reckoning and how to use Skyvector.com to create a flight plan and input this info on the GPS.

    What is Air Navigation?
Navigation means finding your way around the air, Successful air navigation involves piloting an aircraft from place to place without getting lost, breaking the laws applying to aircraft, or endangering the safety of those on board or on the ground.

    What is Dead Reckoning?
Dead reckoning is the navigation procedure to plot and fly (in this case) a course based solely on mathematical calculations. "You're Dead if you don't Reckon properly".

So now we have the basics covered lets begin to plotter our course and flight routes:
For this section well be making a 3 hops flight on a nice default FSX scenery well be taking of from Portland INTL - KPDX to Cascade Locks State Airfield KCZK and to Columbia Gorge Regional - KDLS.

Step 1. Open skyvector to check the charts of VFR on this link.

Step 2.Flight Procedures and Checklist - What plane you will be using? C172, C152 Freeware, Mooney Bravo or a BC-Baron 58; The speed in Knots for this tutorial well be max of 180kts and below that, the altitude will be flying is 1,200 AGL or ASL. Once we have this info well be ready to start our Flight Plan.

Step 3.Lets begin to input our Takeoff AP will be KPDX. Where do i put this info? Look below the SkyVector logo on the left there is a link called Flight Plan click on it; this link will open the Flight Plan Box in there type KPDX, once you have type it down press enter or click add; Now we have our Takeoff AP added in the FP, In there you will notice that there is a box that sayd GS and KTS in that box type the speed that well be cruising to the next AP so we can know how much time will it take us from this point to the next one that is KCZK; and the input the last landing AP tha is KDLS; now that you have the basic go practice more FP after this tutorial to master you Flight Planing skills *note you can also plan you flight by Right clicking in top of the AP there you will see some options try it out.

Step 4.Now that we have all the Waypoints set up, it now says that this trip is a 60.8nm of distance that well be travelling. You can take off from where ever u want as long that you land in the following options: for KCZK RWY 06 and for KDLS RWY 07.

Step 5.How do I put this info in the GPS? Well its pretty much easy but like always you will need to practice. Check this Link for Visual Training Part One, Part 2 this Link, Part Three Link; Once you have watch them all well begin to enter our ICAO that is KCZK for a Direct Heading to land, repeat for the next Airport KDLS. Select APP(Approach) for KCZK RWY 06 and for KDLS RWY 07 if the options is available, if it does not appear for you do a go-around and find the RWY visually, and proceed your call outs for approaching and finals to land; once landed prepare the
GPS for the last AP KDLS and set the approach for RWY 07 if available taxi to takeoff and make your call-outs for departure on the RWY of your choosing and takeoff once granted. Good Luck.

If you still don't know how to input this information you contact me on the msflights.net TS or you can MSG me to book a training session and well make this flight very enjoyable my in game tag is N6290A - CT - Angel.

If this tutorial helped you please let me know in the polls and Say Thanks in here. More tutorials comming soon if you guys liked it from Angel's Ground School.

Thanks for the tutorial, Angel. Good job. Taking it slow in the beginning is always a good choice. Eventually, I would like to read your tutorial about stars and sids.
