  • Mil Mi-24V "Hind" Storm’s alpha release v0.4

Due to popular demand, I'm pre-releasing my version of the Hind helicopter as v0.4 alpha status. You will find it on my OneDrive, Factory Floor section, in the "Work in progress & alphas" folder. It IS flyable, but the primary reason for making it available now is so that people can see me on group flights without it being substituted as something inappropriate.

    From the README:

    Mil Mi-24V Storm’s alpha release v0.4 2015-01-20

Why I’m releasing this in ‘alpha’ state
Due to shifting work commitments, I’ve not had time to complete this helicopter. Since:
    (a) it’s my favorite helicopter to fly (usually the UN livery),
    (b) it’s perfectly flyable in the state it’s already in (provided you don’t want radio navigation),
    (c) there’s been a demand to at least see me flying it in group flights, and
    (d) I’m not sure realistically when I’ll find the time to complete it,
I’m making it available now in its unfinished state.

    General characteristics
The Hind (NATO name), is often known as the Crocodile in Eastern bloc countries. You will find it is:
    • Very fast,
    • Very maneuverable,
    • Very stable in bad weather,
    • Very easy to fly (even in its unfinished state).
Its ‘disadvantages’ reflect the disadvantages you’ll find in the real helicopter. They include lack of downward visibility (if you’re used to a bubble cockpit you may not enjoy landing this helicopter) and its rather clunky old-fashioned instrumentation and cockpit layout.

Specific things I’ve added and changed in this alpha version
    • Pop-up GPS is Garmin 500, while virtual cockpit GPS remains Garmin 350.
    • New bespoke airspeed indicator in virtual cockpit.
    • Active Sky Next Xgauge in virtual cockpit.
    • Replacement artificial horizon.
    • New landing assist gauges (upper-right in virtual cockpit main dash). These are:
      • Digital radio altimeter.
      • Wind gauge.
      • Hover gauge (Up/Down and Forward/Back indication)
      • Side-drift gauge.
    • Gauge positions and sizes.
    • More realistic performance/top-speed.
    • Sounds.

Problems yet to fix and things yet to do in future releases
    • Fix sound when changing to external views (replays engine start).
    • Fix texture overlap at bottom-right of VC, and generally improve internal textures.
    • Fix annunciators, notably the fuel low warning, and fuel gauges.
    • Clear windshield: it’s a little too dirty.
    • Fix radios and fix/reposition radio navigation gauges.
    • Test whether Steam compatable.
    • Write full documentation.

    How to install
    1. Shutdown FSX.
    2. Download the zip file.
    3. Unzip the download file into a temporary folder.
    4. Copy the contents of the Effects folder to your top-level Effects folder (2 files).
    5. Copy the Mil Mi-24V Hind folder from SimObjects\Rotorcraft to your SimObjects\Rotorcraft folder.
    6. Restart FSX.
