  • Sister City Flights - week 9 - Jacksonville (Florida) - Blimps and Jennys!

You don't have to fly a Blimp or a Jenny this week, but that's the kind of speed we'll be flying, wafting over the landscape at 60 knots. We start in Georgia, flying along the Golden Isles, but we finish in Florida around Jacksonville.

Jacksonville became San Juan's Sister City only recently, in 2009.

Start Overfly 1st stop 2nd stop Overfly 3rd stop Overfly Last stop
KSSI MAVNK NUTWY FODEX HASAP GA48 55J (KFHB) NRB KCRG ALVAS PAWPA KHEG
Brunswick McKinnon St. Simons Island Union Carbide Fernandina Beach Mayport Jacksonville Executive at Craig Jacksonville Herlong Recreational
Note: Some intersections (notably PAWPA) are slightly offset between simulators.

Flight plans: https://is.gd/StormsFlightPlans (both .PLN and .FMS files available)

Cruise: 60 knots indicated (70 mph), altitude at pilot's discretion, up to 2,000 ft a.s.l. max.

    Aircraft:
    ‣ FSX: Both the Zeppelin NT and the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny are encouraged! :eagerness: Other good aircraft are the J-3 Cub, the Corben Baby Ace, and in fact any aircraft you flew on the Day of the Dude flight!
    ‣ XP11: The J-3 Cub from here. The Shavrov Sh-2 - a kind of mini-ancestor of the Grumman Goose - also works well.
Some ultralights are good and the Aviatika-MAI-890 is perfect for FSX (Day of the Dude).

    Rotorcraft are also acceptable:
    • Slow helicopters, e.g. Bell 47 and Robinson R22.
    • Small tilt-rotors, e.g. Verticopter.
    • Autogyros, e.g. ELA-07-S.

    Scenery: Default is OK.
    ‣ FSX: KSSI and 55J are ORBX freeware airports for FTX Global and Vector users.
    ‣ XP11: KSSI, 55J, KCRG and KHEG have detailed 3D scenery by default in v11.05.

    Server: SimLink AU server: 101.165.150.139

Simulators: All welcome: FS9, FSX boxed, FSX Steam edition, Prepar3D, X-Plane.

Where to get these aircraft? Hints for some...
    • The Zeppelin NT is FSX freeware. Look in Storm's Hangar, "Lighter than air" section.
    • The Curtiss Jenny is FSX freeware. Look in Storm's Hangar, "Vintage" section.
    • The Bell 47 is FSX freeware. Look in Storm's Hangar, "Rotorcraft" section.
    • The Aviatika-MAI-890 is FSX freeware. Look in Storm's Hangar, "General Aviation" section.
    • The Corben Baby Ace is great FSX/P3D freeware. Look in Rara-Avis Simulations (was Classic Wings).
    • The J-3 Cub is FSX default. A freeware XP11 one is available from x-plane.org.
    • The Verticopter, ELA-07-S and Shavrov Sh-2 are XP11 freeware from x-plane.org.
    • For more ideas see the Day of the Dude flight!

Some tips, depending on what you're flying:
    • FSX
      • Zeppelin NT
        • Be sure to use this diagram when you first load the aircraft, clicking the switches and buttons in the order indicated. You can get to the overhead switch panel with a few presses of your 'A' key. Failure to do so will mean you may not fly on all engines and you'll find it harder to take-off and even keep up.
        • It's best to do lateral navigation by hand, not on autopilot, and to use the rudder not ailerons. Otherwise the aircraft will overshoot badly and 'hunt' for its course.
        • If flying nose-up in cruise annoys you, set the propeller swivel to 44 for level flight only, but be sure to reset it to zero at the start of descent, and then manipulate it as normal as normal on approach.
        • At the first airport GA48, there's not much space, so let the fixed wing aircraft land first and then you land in the gaps. (At subsequent airports, there's plenty of space to land well away from the declared runway.)
      • Curtis Jenny
        • Use the JN-4D model not the JN-4H mail plane (which is too fast!).
        • Steering on the ground takes practice! Remind yourself how to do it before the flight.
        • Remember you have no ASI, no flaps, no lights, no nav aids, and no brakes of any kind.
      • White Russian
        • This is the Aviatika-MAI-890 we fly on the Day of the Dude flight. Get it from here but make sure you also install all the mods from Storm's Hangar (look in the General Aviation section), otherwise your stall speed will be too high.
        • Unless you have rudder pedals, always switch on auto-rudder in the cruise.
        • Your final approach speed is 40 knots, but leave some power on in the flare and only reduce it slowly in the hold-off.

    • X-Plane 11
      • PA-11
        • The Piper PA-11 Cub Special is perfectly suited to this flight. However, it has some cosmetic flaws:
          • There's a slight seam in the canopy glass, but there's a fix in the reviews (same page).
          • The slip ball indicates the wrong way! (Ignore it.)
          • The tailplane moving surfaces move the wrong way! (Screenshot problem only.)
          • The cowling and gear disappear when viewed from over half a mile! (Screenshot problem only.)
      • Verticopter
        • The two-seater variant makes for a very comfortable and relaxing flight on autopilot most of the way.
        • Because of the slow speed of this flight:
          • Keep the gear down for the whole flight.
          • Keep the speed brakes up except for landing.
          • Climb and cruise at just 25% forward thrust vector.

Reminder (and trivia questions!): Bring your Zeppelin* to KSSI at 9pm eastern tonight. *Other 60kt aircraft OK too! :eagerness:

      Awfully hard™ trivia questions:
      1. We're not even in Florida yet, and we're passing a spaceport. Where are we?!
      2. We're visiting the "Island of 8 Flags". Which flags are those, and why?
      3. How will we pass close to two sets of harps?

Recommended weather setting: Fair weather, not live weather. (Due to rain/visibility, not wind.) Extra trivia question: Who is Jessica, how is she connected to our flight, and how will she affect our landings?
