  • Sister City Flights - week 4 - Coventry (England) - Jennys and Cubs!

    Coventry became Kiel's first Sister City in 1947. Coventry is perhaps best known for the legend of the lady in the statue above! Five very short hops, low and very slow, make up this week's flight, and you're encouraged to bring your Jenny or Cub!

    Start 1st stop 2nd stop 3rd stop 4th stop Last stop
    EGBM EGBD EGNX EGBG EG74 EGBE
    Tatenhill Derby East Midlands Leicester Bruntingthorpe Coventry
    Flight plans: https://is.gd/StormsFlightPlans (both .PLN and .FMS files available)
    The hops are short, especially the first one,

    Cruise: 60-65 knots indicated at up to 2000 ft a.s.l. max. (70-75 mph; 110-120 km/h.)

    Aircraft: Both the Curtiss JN-4 Jenny and the Piper J-3 Cub are encouraged! :eagerness:
    ‣ FSX: Download your free Jenny from Storm's Hangar (Vintage section). Default J-3 is fine.
    ‣ XP11: Download your free J-3 Cub from here.
    There are also ultralights (e.g. FSX Trike) and motorgliders (e.g. XP11 Swift Lite and Horten Ho II) that will do the very slow speed, but take care you have a sensible SimLink code ready to tell everyone what you are flying!
    Please do NOT bring blimps or zeppelins to this particular flight!

    Scenery: Default is OK. However, if you have either ORBX scenery for England (FSX/P3D payware) installed or EGBM 3D scenery (X-Plane freeware), you'll see the building where one of my daughters works as an avionics engineer at our starting airport! ride: Free XP11 3D scenery available for all airports, downloadable here (although EG74 has no buildings).

    Server: SimLink AU server: 101.165.150.139

    Simulators: All welcome: FS9, FSX boxed, FSX Steam edition, Prepar3D, X-Plane.

    Some notes on authentic British pronunciation!
    Tatenhill = TAT-ən-hill (where ə is a schwa, very common in British English. e.g. the a in sofa)
    Derby = DAH-bi (not DER-bi!)
    Loughborough = LUFF-bərə (or LUFF-brə)
    Leicester = LEST-ə
    Coventry = COV-ən-tri (not CUV-ən-tree or COVE-ən-tree)
    ...shire = shə (not sh-IRE or SHYr) as in Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire

    Reminder (and trivia questions!): Join us at 9pm eastern in SimLink at EGBM for a low and very slow run around the British Midlands. Ideally bring your Jenny or a Cub. :eagerness:

    Awfully hard™ trivia questions:
    1. They used to build Lancaster bombers there, but now it's just the biggest of its kind in Europe.
    2. They named a vegetarian meat substitute after this village, but we're just interested in a nearby hole in the ground.
    3. Which major landmark, less than a mile from the end of one of our runways tonight, is entirely absent from all freeware and payware scenery for FSX, P3D and XP11?

    And one open-ended bit of fun:
    • The area is full of weird and bizarre place names. Which ones did you spot?

    Answers during the flight only please (not below!).
