  • Around the World Lap 4 --- episode 22: Stocking the Breadbasket --- 1 million BCE Mekong Delta

Hi pilots! Looks like its time for another adventure back in Time!

    Tonight's mission:

The Mekong River Delta of southern Indochina is called the "Breadbasket of Vietnam" due to the vast amount of food and resources available in the region. That is of course only going to be possible after we successfully complete our mission on Thursday night. HQ is sending us back in time one million years so that we can seed the area with fish, shrimp, rice, turtles, snakes, mangos, fowl, and foliage enough to jumpstart these lush wetlands.

    Thursdays flightplan is as follows:

    Danang Intl Vietnam departure (VVDN)
    Ubon Ratchathani Thailand (VTUU)
    Kampong Chhnang Cambodia (VDKH)
    Camau Vietnam (VVCM)

A flightplan .PLN file for this flight can be found here:
    http://1drv.ms/1O4aN5s

This flight will take place in SimLink. See here for details: http://msflights.net/forum/showthrea...nk-Quick-start

    AIRCRAFT
The preferred aircraft is the C-130 Hercules. Alternatives include the C-97 Stratofreighter, the Antonov An-12 and An-32, the C-133 Cargomaster, the Howard 500 and the Boxcar - or any cargo prop that can do 250 kts at 18,000 ft.
    No Jets.

Recommended SimLink type codes when you connect using vPilot:
If you're flying Enter the Type Code
    C-130 C130
    An-12 AN12
    C-97 C97
    An-32 AN32
    C-133 C97 or C130
    (C133 beta available*)
    C-119 (Boxcar) C119
    L-188 (Electra) DC4
    Howard 500 DC3
Ensure you have the latest model matching files installed.
*Beta test version of C-133 model matching now available, see here.

    -------------------------------------------
    Not sure what to fly?

For those who don't have or don't want to fly the C-130, Storm was kind enough to document which are the best planes for these "Around the World" cargo flights. This should help you decide.

    • C-97 Stratofreighter Popular, quality freeware that comes with an installer (v2) available here, or without an installer (v3) but with extra models and separate optional extra mods and liveries here (look in the Cargo props section).
    • C-133 Cargomaster Largest aircraft with a massive payload, but easy to fly (with practice) and still keeps up with the C-130. Download it here (look in the Cargo props section).
    • An-12 Most similar to C-130. Most extras (airbrake, autothrottle, paradrop). Russian annotations. Most difficult to fly. Download it here (look in the Cargo props section).
    • An-32 Most frame-rate friendly. Best cockpit model. Easy to fly except long spool time. Needs refueling on long flights. Download with an installer here.
    • Howard 500 Easy for piston engine pilots. Best climber. Tail-dragger. Performance tails off at altitude. Poorest frame rates. Download it here (look in the Cargo props section).
    • C-119 Boxcar Easiest to fly. Download it here (look in the Cargo props section).
      • Re-engined (French) variant: Faster. Normal climb rates.
      • Normal engine variants: Slower. Half the climb rate so gets left behind on short-medium length flights.

    Comparative flat-out speeds:

    Happy landings,

The Douglas C-133B Cargomaster is now available for these flights. You can download it from Storm's Hangar (look in the Cargo prop section). I have been test flying it for the last two weeks on Lazer's Around the World flights. I've made some significant mods to the freeware versions previously available, so I recommend you try my version if you want to try it at all. Additionally Novawing24 has added an extra livery. :eagerness:

The real aircraft was produced between 1956 and 1961. Fifty were built and the last was in service until 1971, when the jet powered C-5 Galaxy took over. It was capable of carrying 110,000 pounds of cargo (compared to a C-130's 45,000).

Some things to be aware of if you try the Cargomaster:
    • This is a very early "Piglet" plane. The external model is good, but please be forgiving with the internal model/textures!
    • The speed performance is roughly the same as the C-130 (slightly better).
    • The short field performance when full laden is much worse than the C-130 and you'll need up to 5,000 ft runway when heavy.
    • It's much bigger than either the C-130 or the C-97 so allow lots of space on the ground (see diagram below).
    • It's less maneuverable in the air than the C-130.
    • Use the special "thirty-thirty" gauge to bring off flawless landings.
    • It has massive inertia, so use the special technique described in the manual when descending to make sure you don't go too fast.
    • For that matter, read the manual!

Our good friend Mike 404 is looking into AI and model matching files for the C-133. (Thank you Mike!) In the meantime, portray yourself as either a C130 or a C97. This is just to make sure you stake your claim to space on the ground!

Here is C133 representation ready for testing.
Let's have a look how it works before including in default set.

      (ReadMe included ......)

This set is for beta testers only.
If you don't want to mess around with installing and uninstalling model sets, wait for default model set update (V6)

It works wonderfully. If Lazer permits, I will fly the C133 vPilot type code on Thursday, so other pilots please either (a) install this beta or (b) ensure your default aircraft is not an A321! (The A321 is actually a lot smaller than the C-133: 146 ft x 112 ft vs. 157 ft x 179 ft!) Lazer?

Hi pilots! Just a reminder for tonight's flight around the Mekong Delta region of Indochina.
We will gather at Danang Intl Vietnam (VVDN) for a 9pm eastern departure.

Hope to see everyone there for a night of group flight fun and trivia. Remember... sometimes nobody knows.
              Happy landings,
              Lazer
