  • On this day in history...

Original 'placeholder' post by WarHawK. The following content was added later by Storm.

On October 9th, 1987, the first prototype of the EH101 helicopter took to the air from Yeovil in the southwest of England. This Friday flight takes us from the AgustaWestland works at Yeovil to the home of Air Assault 2015 at Duxford. En route we'll call in at the home of Britten-Norman and also at the main UK base for the Merlin (the military version of the EH101).

Storm will be flight lead, and is filling in for WarHawK's vacant slot this week.

    Flight plan
    Leg #1: EGHG > EGHH* > EGHJ
    Leg #2: EGHJ > EGHP* > EGUB
    Leg #3: EGUB > EGTC* > EGSU
    *overfly only

Download the flight plan PLN file here.

    Simulator
Whatever you choose! Classic/Boxed, Steam, P3D are all OK.
Flight lead will be in Classic/Boxed.

    Aircraft
EH101s are preferred, naturally! The default that comes with FSX is fine = version 1. However, there's a version 2 by David Robles which is much better to fly. Where to get version 2?
    • From our Vault, the download area of our website. This version has 2 liveries. If you have already downloaded this, it's a good one to fly. However, if you have not, be advised that the Vault download link is currently not working.
    • From rikoooo. This is a 5 livery version of the EH101 Merlin (military version). You can download it here. It comes with a triple-installer for Classic/Steam/P3D. This installation does NOT interfere with existing EH101 v1 or v2 installations, and you'll need to install this if you want to see flight lead, so go ahead and install it anyway. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! :eagerness:
Otherwise, if you're not happy flying the EH101, fly any helicopter that can keep up!
Flight lead will fly the Merlin, red and white HM Coast Guard livery, from rikoooo.

    Restrictions
    No fixed wing aircraft.

    Cruise
140 knots, approx, and at less than 2,000 feet.
(The EH101 will fly faster and cruise faster, but there's no rush!)

    Weather
    Default server.
Flight lead will be using Active Sky Next if possible.

    Scenery
    Default is OK.
Download excellent free scenery for our final stop EGSU Duxford here.
Flight lead will use OrbX England and EGHP (both payware), and EGSU Duxford (freeware, above).

Obscure trivia (for a cerebral celebration):
          1. What did they start making 850 years ago, 20 nmi north of our departure airport, that's now copied all over the world?
          2. What do mares' tails have to do with this airport we're visiting? (Photo taken by Storm's passenger, on finals, 1991)
          3. Do you know where Ratty's father ended up?
          4. A collection of huts: what were they used for? It's an enigma!
