  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #35: Nebraska - 300 kts

Small sub-sonic jets at 300 kts through the Cornhusker State, on our way to the Center of the Earth (well, the geographic center of the Great 48). Actually, it's in North Kansas, but we're making a slight detour. But don't hold your breath; there's almost nothing to see there, not even in real life.

    Week 35: Nebraska
    Stops: KMLE>K82>KLBF>KIEN
    Full: KMLE>KLNK>CENUS>K82>KHDE>KLBF>KGRN>KIEN

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • All legs have one or more additional GPS waypoints.
    • We'll change course on approach, according to surface wind.
    • Waypoint CENUS (center of the US) is a user defined waypoint, not an intersection.
    • Our first stop lies just over the border in Kansas.
Download the PLN flight plan file here.
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
Speed: 300 knots Keep it throttled back!
Altitude: 3000ft VFR (using your judgment to avoid obstacles)

    AIRCRAFT
    Small* subsonic jets.
*Small = wingspan less than 50 ft and less than 10 passengers.
Must be capable of take-off and landing on 3,600 x 50 ft runway.

    Examples of suitable aircraft:
    • Default Learjet 45
    • T45 Goshawk (Dino Cattaneo)
    • Gloster Meteor (Robert James Richardson)
    • Cirrus Vision SF50 (FlightSim Developers)
I will be flying the Mk8 Meteor.

    RESTRICTIONS
No aircraft capable of supersonic flight (straight and level).
No aircraft with more than 50 ft wingspan.
No aircraft capable of carrying more than 10 passengers.

    WHICH VERSION, CLASSIC OR STEAM?
We will be using Classic, not Steam. We will continue to use Classic in future weeks for the Great 48! until I can assure pilot security for the flight, at which point we'll include Steam in joint Classic/Steam flights, leaving no one behind!

    WEATHER
    To be decided.

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware). On sale 40% off!
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware).
Vector users please see recommendations here.

RECOMMENDED SCENERY ADDITIONS FOR FTX GLOBAL USERS
You can download the whole series of freeware FTX global airport packs here.
This week there are 3 OrbX airports: KMLE, KLBF and KIEN. :eagerness:

Reminder: Join us at KMLE in your small subsonic jet for our 9pm departure, Journeying to the Center of the Earth (cut dramatic music).
Extra flight info: Read about our second stop tonight here in the section "More about our destination: The story of North Platte field." (It'll save me from having to read it to you during the flight, and save you from having to listen to me! )
Trivia: What has (a) cardboard, and (b) this picture, got to do with tonight's flight? Answers and guesses during the flight itself.

I had such fun in Novawing's Sunday morning flight in Dino Cattaneo's Aermacchi MD-326 single engine jet trainer that I believe I will fly it on this group flight also.

That aircraft, along with all the other Cattaneo marvels is available here:

I just downloaded Dino's new release, and I think I give it a test flight this evening.

A little late but here are some of my snaps from the flight!

Thanks Storm for a chance to get the beautiful Meteor out!

The repaint I am flying is for the F Mk 4 Meteor from RJR and is available from my OneDrive.
