  • Wonders of the World! - NIAGARA FALLS

This week we will be flying to Niagara Falls! Our friend Coast lives in that area, so he will be planning this flight.
Coast, the mic is all yours. See you on Friday!

    Sincerely,
    DeathseekerDXC

P.S. - Coast, let me know if you need me to help with anything. Thanks.

I will lead the first part of the group flight between 7 and 8 pm, and DeathseekerDXC will take the second part.

    A I R C R A F T:
I plan to fly the informal flight plan below using a single engined fixed wing prop aircraft capable of at least 150 knots. In fact I like the default Mooney Bravo for this flight. The Cessna 172 will be a little to slow, and Beech Baron B58 a little too fast, although each aircraft has it's benefits in some segments of this group flight. I have flown this area in many different FSX aircraft, and find it particularly challenging to do it in the Douglas DC-3.

    P A R T 1:
Niagara Falls consists of two separate parts, the American side and the Canadian side (called the Horseshoe Falls). We will depart from KBUF (Buffalo-Niagara International Airport) on Runway 32 and fly almost due North. We will come in over the falls from the high side of the Niagara river around Goat Island (back side of the falls) and turn right to fly down into the Niagara Gorge (watch out for the bridges, the power project, the Maid-of-the-Mist tour boat, and the Whirlpool a little downstream (hairpin turn here so go slow). We will fly just above the river all the way out to where it meets Lake Ontario. This is where two old pre-Revolutionary war Forts are located (alas not in FSX) Fort George on the Canadian side and Fort Niagara on the American side.

We will then do a complete course reversal and fly back to the falls via the Niagara Gorge to the falls and see it from the front side (again watch out for all the stuff I previously mentioned). We will then head for KIAG and land on Runway 24 using a left downwind approach and make a 180 deg turn to come from the east.

    P A R T 2:
DeathseekerDXC will lead this part of the group flight, so after everyone has landed just form up on Runway 28R. We will depart KIAG from Runway 28R this time, and fly over the Falls again and down the Niagara Gorge as before, but this time when we get to Lake Ontario we will continue across lake toward Toronto. When we get to Toronto we will circle the CN Tower before landing at Toronto City Airport CYTZ . I used Runway 26 after turning a lazy left downwind leg. But whatever runway the flight lead selects, everyone else should use the same pattern and same runway to avoid colliding with each other

If you end up flying into Toronto and are in anything smaller than a Dash 8, I highly recommend the approach into CYTZ as opposed to CYYZ, as it will allow you to loop around the tower and approach on runway 26 that has a beautiful approach over the water and marshlands with the city just off to the side of you.

Great idea. I think this is a great suggestion for that option, and will amend that flight plan accordingly.
