Introduction:
Since we used up almost all the states, the State Hop this week will be be in the US territory of Puerto Rico. It is a relatively small island where slower prop aircraft are better suited to the shorter distances and mostly shorter runways. We will be flying around the island along the coast to start, and then over the mountains in the middle of the island for a final landing at the major international airport in San Juan.
Puerto Rico
• Total Area: 3,151 square miles (8,959 sq km)
• Population: 3,927,188 (2006 estimate)
The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico is located in the Caribbean Sea, about 1,000 mi east-southeast of Miami, Fla. A possession of the United States, it consists of the island of Puerto Rico plus the adjacent islets of Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. Puerto Rico has a mountainous, tropical ecosystem with very little flat land and few mineral resources.
Puerto Rico is a major hub of Caribbean commerce, finance, tourism, and communications. San Juan is one of the world's busiest cruise-ship ports, and Puerto Rico's standard of living continues to be among the highest in the Western Hemisphere. Its future political status, however, remains unclear. On March 4, 1998, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that called for binding elections in Puerto Rico to decide the island's permanent political status.
Time-zone Break Down: Friday, October 4th, 2013 at:
9PM Eastern
8PM Central
7PM Mountain
6PM Pacific
Preferred Aircraft:
Recommendations for aircraft we will use would be the Beech Baron 58, Cessna C208B Grand Caravan, Douglas DC-3/C-47, Grumman Goose G21, Beech 18/C-45, or any GA propeller aircraft capable of about 120 to 160 knots. Since this speed range is moderately large, we will try to accommodate the slower aircraft to keep the group somewhat together.

We will be flying at about 1500 feet along the coast and from 3500 to 5000 feet inland. Since we will all be on "vacation" in Puerto Rico, we will be taking our time and looking out our windows from time to time.
